What is UP e challan?

An e challan UP is an electronically generated traffic violation ticket issued to the person who violates the traffic rules and regulations in Uttar Pradesh. An E Challan in Uttar Pradesh is issued by a traffic police officer when someone fails to comply with the laws mentioned under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The e-challan carries all the details relating to the violation - time, location, fine amount, etc.

The eChallan system was launched by the Government to ensure proper enforcement of traffic laws across the nation, while ensuring quick e challan check and settlement. As of 2017 - 2021, a total of 30.52 lakh UP e challan were issued. This digital system has improved accountability and boosted road safety across major cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, Ghaziabad, etc.

Why check the E Challan in Uttar Pradesh

E challan UP check is important, especially in case of resale, RC transfer, etc. The other significant reasons are:

  • To avoid delayed penalties.
  • To check e challan status UP - pending, failed, processing, disputed, etc.
  • To ensure if it is true by looking at the e challan UP with photo (often attached with the challan)
  • To take timely actions - settle or challenge a challan.

How does the UP online vehicle challan system work?

The system operates through a seamless integration of technology. The traffic offence is first detected through CCTV cameras. The system then scans the vehicle’s registration number, retrieves owner details from the RTO (Uttar Pradesh Parivahan challan database), and instantly generates the challan online. The challan is then shared with the vehicle owner via SMS, informing him about the violation. He can check and pay the UP challan online.

Benefits of the UP e challan system

The digitization of the Uttar Pradesh vehicle challan system offers several advantages for both citizens and the police:

  • Transparency: Minimizes human error and corruption with digitally recording and sharing e challan UP with photo.

  • Citizen Convenience: Enables easy challan check in Uttar Pradesh and online payment from anywhere, without visiting a traffic police station.

  • Improved Efficiency: Allows faster, paperless processing and better record management for the RTO challan system.

  • Accessibility: Provides rapid access for online e challan UP check, allowing motorists to quickly verify fine details.

  • Stronger Enforcement: Automated monitoring in cities like Lucknow and Kanpur ensures higher compliance and safer roads.

Recent developments in traffic enforcement across Uttar Pradesh

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has made stricter norms for the proper enforcement of the traffic laws and regulations across Uttar Pradesh.

The new rules, effective from January 01, 2026, are:

  • 5-strike rule: If a motorist exceeds 5 traffic challan (issued from January 01, 2026) in a single year, the driving licence will be suspended.

  • Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2026: These rules have been notified, amending Rule 21 (suspension and disqualification of driving licence).

In addition to this, changes in the e-challan payment timeline have also been made. The revised rules dictate:

  • If a challan is issued online, the violator must receive it within 3 days and for a physical challan, within 15 days.
  • If no response is received within 45 days, the challan will be treated as accepted.
  • In case of a failed disputed challan case, the fine payment must be paid within 30 days.
  • In case of many unpaid challans, the Parivahan services will be blocked.

What happens if the UP e challan remains unpaid?

According to the Transport Department, a total of 2,701,786 e-challans were issued in 2024-25, accounting for a sum of ₹1,411.2 crore; out of these, over 81% challans remain unpaid. Unpaid challans result in additional penalties/fines, vehicle impoundment, and DL suspension.

In some cases, if the challan remains unpaid for a long time, it can also lead to a court summons. Moreover, as per the recent update, in case of many unpaid challans, the Parivahan services will be blocked for your vehicle. Thus, it is advised to pay the E Challan in Uttar Pradesh at the earliest.

Can I check e challan UP with photo?

No, a car challan in Uttar Pradesh cannot be checked with a photo; instead, you can check a pending challan by number plate. Further, you can even check if the issued challan is correct by taking a look at the photo attached to the challan (in some cases).

How to perform e challan check by vehicle number?

This is the simplest and most handy way of checking pending UP e challan if you don’t have a DL or the challan receipt with you. Simply enter the vehicle number and search for the pending UP challan. The challan will then be fetched from the government databases and reflected within seconds.

You can do an online e challan check UP by vehicle number through the Park+ and Parivahan eChallan website.

When to check e challan UP by vehicle number?

It is most suitable if you are not sure if a challan has been issued on your vehicle. The other related cases are:

  • For regular e challan check UP.
  • When buying a second-hand vehicle.
  • In case you don’t have a challan number or DL with you at the moment.
  • To quickly check e challan status UP.

How to check challan status UP online?

Checking the challan status online has become much simpler with the online platforms - Park+ and Parivahan.

To check the challan status on Park+, complete the login and visit the profile section. Look for the ‘Orders’ sections to check the updated challan status. Moreover, you can also check it through the Parivahan eChallan website, and take action to check e challan UP.

It is suggested to always check the challan status after making the payment to ensure it is settled successfully.

What are the different challan statuses?

When checking e challan status UP, you might see different statuses - paid, failed, pending, processing, court, challan not found, disputed, etc. This is what each status means:

  • Paid : When a UP e challan fine amount is paid successfully.

  • Pending : If the challan is unpaid and you are required to pay the challan.

  • Processing : When the UP fine amount is processed but is not updated in the server yet. Wait for some time to know the updated status.

  • Failed : If the challan amount is not deducted from your account due to a network issue, etc. In this, you need to try paying the challan again.

  • Court : If the traffic challan is moved to the court or if a ‘Court Challan’ is issued for the committed offence. The payment for these challans cannot be processed online. These challans are settled at the court mentioned in the notice.

  • Disputed : If a complaint for a wrongly issued challan is raised, the status will reflect as ‘Disputed’ until the investigation is completed.

  • Challan Not Found : This appears if there are no pending challans or if the new challans are in the uploading process.

What to do after paying the UP online vehicle challan?

Once a challan payment is triggered through reliable online platforms - Park and Parivahan, it takes some time to reflect the status. The payment is first detected by the payment gateway, followed by the servers of the traffic police. Once it is successfully updated in the traffic police’s servers, you will be able to check the challan status online. Upon successful completion of the fine amount, it is advised to download the challan payment receipt for records, police verification or RTO-related services.

Why is a car challan in Uttar Pradesh not reflecting online?

Sometimes, the UP online vehicle challan does not show up due to technical issues or manual errors. The key reasons include:

  • Server issues

    • If the server is under maintenance.

  • Incorrect details

    • If the entered challan number, vehicle number or DL is incorrect.

  • Verification failure

    • In case of incorrect captcha entered, when asked.

  • Payment processing

    • If you have just made the payment, and it has not been updated in the data yet.

  • Newly issued challan

    • If the challan is recently issued and has not been uploaded to the database.

What to do if the E Challan in Uttar Pradesh is not showing up?

The common fixes include:

  • Try checking the challan after sometime.
  • Check the internet connection or if there is any server issue.
  • Re-check the entered details - vehicle number, captcha, etc.
  • Clear cache and browser data to fix page loading issues.
  • Refresh the tab and try again.
