Tata Nexon topped India's February 2026 car sales charts with 19,430 units, reflecting a strong 26.59% year-on-year surge.
Tata Motors delivered the highest incremental growth of any manufacturer in the top 10.
Maruti Suzuki placed six models in the top 10, yet faced mixed results. Dzire, Brezza, and Ertiga grew strongly, while Wagon R, Swift, and Baleno posted year-on-year declines.
India's car market wrapped up February 2026 on a positive note, with the top 10 best-selling models collectively shifting 1,70,127 units. That's an 8.76% rise compared to February 2025, when 1,56,425 units were recorded across the same group of cars.
A solid number, though it's worth noting that sales dipped 5.9% compared to January 2026's 1,80,798 units, a month-on-month softening that's fairly typical after early-year momentum begins to settle.
Still, the year-on-year picture is encouraging. Buyers clearly haven't hit the brakes.
The Top 10 Best-Selling Cars in India, February 2026
Tata Nexon, 19,430 Units
The Nexon, including its electric variant, reclaimed the crown for yet another month. Sales jumped 26.59% compared to February 2025, a remarkable performance for a model that faces stiff competition on all sides.
Month-on-month, volumes were down 16.84% from January, but that's a minor footnote in what has otherwise been a dominant run.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire, 19,326 Units
Just 104 units behind the Nexon, the Dzire proved it's far from done. A 31.52% year-on-year rise, the strongest growth percentage in the entire top 10, shows that compact sedans still have a loyal following in India. Monthly volumes dipped just 1.54%, making this a remarkably consistent performance.
Tata Punch, 18,748 Units
The recently updated Punch (EV included) rounded off an impressive podium finish for Tata, with 28.77% year-on-year growth. This makes Tata Motors the only manufacturer with two cars in the top three, a fact that says everything about the brand's momentum right now.
Hyundai Creta, 17,938 Units
The Creta, including its electric version, posted a measured 9.93% year-on-year increase and almost no change month-on-month (+0.09%). It may not be the flashiest performer this month, but the Creta's consistency is its calling card.
Maruti Brezza & Ertiga, 17,863 and 17,807 Units
Brezza climbed 16.05% year-on-year and even eked out a 2.16% monthly gain, impressive given that a facelift is just around the corner. Ertiga wasn't far behind, up 19.77% year-on-year. These two models form the backbone of Maruti's strong showing this month.
Wagon R, Swift, Scorpio & Baleno
This is where the story gets a little more complicated. Wagon R slipped a sharp 25.12% year-on-year to 14,885 units. Swift fell 8.83% to 14,833 units. Baleno dropped 5.48% to 14,632 units. The silver lining? - Mahindra's Scorpio/Scorpio N bucked the trend entirely, rising 7.69% year-on-year to 14,665 units, proof that Mahindra's SUV strategy continues to pay off.

The Brand Battle: Who's Really Winning?
Look at the numbers by manufacturer, and you'll see two very different stories playing out side by side. Maruti Suzuki remains the undisputed volume king, accounting for 99,346 units across six models in the top 10. However, its year-on-year growth was a modest 2.86%; gains from Dzire, Brezza, and Ertiga were largely cancelled out by the struggles of Wagon R, Swift, and Baleno.
Tata Motors, on the other hand, was the standout performer. Its two models together contributed an extra 8,270 units compared to the same period last year, the largest absolute gain of any brand in the top 10.
A 27.65% year-on-year growth rate underlines just how decisively Tata has shifted its standing in the Indian market. Hyundai and Mahindra both delivered steady, single-digit growth, reliable rather than spectacular, but solid foundations all the same.
What This Tells Us About India's Car Market
A few things stand out from February's numbers. First, SUVs are simply dominating. Nexon, Punch, Creta, Brezza, and Scorpio all feature strongly, and that's not likely to change anytime soon.
Second, Tata Motors' electric push is clearly resonating with buyers; combining EV and ICE variants gives the brand a wider net to cast.
Third, and perhaps most interestingly, Maruti's hold on the market is real but not unshakeable. The declines in some of its long-running models suggest buyers are increasingly drawn to fresher options. Watch this space, the facelifted Brezza is on its way, and that could shake things up further heading into the summer months.
