BYD confirms June 9th 2026, as the India launch date for the Sealion 6 DM-i, the country's first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.
The SUV pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with BYD's Blade Battery technology, delivering up to 344 bhp and a claimed combined range of 1,092 km.
India's electric vehicle landscape is about to shift in a meaningful way. BYD, the Chinese automaker that has steadily built its presence in the country through a lineup of pure electric vehicles, is now preparing to go a step further.
The Sealion 6 DM-i, equipped with the brand's globally acclaimed plug-in hybrid technology, is confirmed to launch in India on June 9th 2026, making it the very first PHEV to go on sale in the country.
Months of Testing on Indian Roads Preceded the Official Announcement
This launch has not come out of thin air. The Sealion 6 PHEV has been spotted testing undisguised on Indian roads on multiple occasions over the past several months.
BYD had also put the SUV on display at Auto Expo 2025, clearly gauging how the Indian market would respond to a premium plug-in hybrid offering. In the days leading up to the announcement, the company began releasing teasers of its DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid technology on its social channels, building steady anticipation.
Sold internationally as the Song Plus and the Seal U in certain markets, the Sealion 6 shares its design language with the Sealion 7 EV, which already holds a respected position in India's premium electric SUV space.
How BYD's DM-i Technology Actually Works
The centrepiece of the Sealion 6 is BYD's DM-i, short for Dual Mode-intelligent, hybrid system. At its core, the technology is designed to deliver an EV-first driving experience while keeping the reassurance of a petrol engine in reserve.
Under everyday conditions, the Blade Battery powers the electric motor and the car operates much like a pure EV, quietly and efficiently. When the battery charge begins to deplete, the petrol engine steps in to generate electricity, with the electric motor continuing to drive the wheels.
At higher speeds, the petrol engine can take on the responsibility of powering the wheels directly, with the electric motor lending support as required. The result is a system that keeps fuel consumption low without ever leaving the driver stranded.
Two Powertrain Configurations Offer Different Capabilities
Globally, the Sealion 6 DM-i is offered with a choice of two setups. The entry-level configuration uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with an 18.3 kWh battery, producing a combined output of 218 bhp with front-wheel drive and a pure-electric range of up to 140 km.
The more potent variant uses a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, a larger 26.6 kWh battery, all-wheel drive, and a combined output of 344 bhp, with an electric-only range of up to 128 km.
Across both, the claimed combined driving range on a full tank and a full charge stands at an impressive 1,092 km.
A Cabin Stacked With Premium Technology
Inside, the Sealion 6 DM-i is expected to arrive well-equipped. The interior is centred around a rotating 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, accompanied by a fully digital instrument cluster. The SUV is also expected to offer a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, connected car technology, an ADAS safety suite, and premium cabin materials throughout.
Price and Who It Will Compete Against in India
BYD is expected to price the Sealion 6 DM-i between Rs 45 and Rs 50 lakh. At that figure, it will line up against established names such as the Toyota Fortuner, Volkswagen Tayron, Skoda Kodiaq, and the MG Majestor.
In the emerging PHEV space specifically, it will soon be joined in competition by the MG 520 and the JSW Motors Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid SUV.
