MG has introduced its ADAPT NEV platform to support multiple electrified powertrains in India
Two new models based on this platform are set to arrive within this financial year
MG Motor India has pulled the wraps off a new platform called ADAPT, built specifically to underpin its upcoming range of new energy vehicles in the country. Rather than being tied to a single type of powertrain, this architecture has been engineered to flexibly support hybrid electric vehicles, plug in hybrid electric vehicles and range extender electric vehicles.
The carmaker has confirmed that the platform will give rise to one electric vehicle and one plug in hybrid model within this financial year, although it has not yet clarified whether these will carry the MG badge or arrive under the MG Select sub brand.
What The Platform Brings To The Table
At the heart of ADAPT sits a dedicated hybrid engine paired with a purpose built battery system, along with what the brand describes as a first for the Indian market, a 10 in 1 intelligent electric drive unit.
Alongside this sits an electromagnetic dedicated hybrid transmission, which the company claims is a global first. An intelligent energy management system ties all of these components together, constantly adjusting how the engine, battery and motor work with one another to balance efficiency, performance and everyday comfort.
The hybrid engine itself has been designed purely for electrified use, aiming for stronger thermal efficiency alongside reduced fuel consumption. Working alongside it, the dedicated battery system is tuned to deliver quick electric response along with improved safety margins.
The compact drive unit trims down mechanical complexity while still pushing performance and efficiency higher, and the transmission is built to hand over power smoothly with quicker response for a more refined feel behind the wheel.
Four Ways To Drive
One of the more interesting aspects of ADAPT is how its energy management brain reads road and traffic conditions in real time, then automatically shifts between four distinct drive modes.
Pure electric drive keeps things silent and responsive around town, while series hybrid drive lets the engine generate power purely to feed the motor. Parallel hybrid drive brings the engine and motor together for stronger performance, and engine direct drive kicks in for efficient cruising on the highway.
The architecture has also been built with enough flexibility to support range extender technology. Under this setup, the electric motor remains solely responsible for driving the wheels, while a small petrol engine works quietly in the background purely to top up the battery whenever needed.
MG Joins A Crowded Hybrid Race
With this move, MG becomes the latest name to place serious weight behind hybrid technology for Indian roads, joining a list that already includes Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Tata, Mahindra, Maruti and Toyota, each of whom has either announced hybrid plans or is expanding an existing hybrid line-up over the coming years.
Another rival has also shown a broadly similar setup with comparable drive options, though it is expected to approach its India rollout starting from the top end of its range downward.
In The Company's Own Words
Speaking at the unveiling, Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director of JSW MG Motor India, said that the company believes the future of mobility lies in giving customers the freedom to choose an energy solution suited to their lifestyle, without giving up performance, efficiency or driving experience. He added that ADAPT marks a defining milestone in the brand's new energy vehicle journey and reflects its commitment to bringing globally advanced technology relevant to Indian customers' evolving needs.
