BYD India Teases DM-i Plug-in Hybrid Technology, Sealion 6 or Atto 2 PHEV Launch Expected Soon

BYD India has shared an official teaser for its DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid technology on social media, marking the brand's first public hint at entering the PHEV segment. With the Sealion 6 PHEV and the Atto 2 both recently spotted testing on Indian roads, the Chinese automaker appears to be gearing up to offer buyers an electrified alternative that goes well beyond its current all-electric portfolio.

  • BYD India has officially teased its DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid technology on social media, pointing strongly towards an imminent PHEV market entry.

  • Both the Sealion 6 PHEV and the compact Atto 2 have been caught testing in India, making either model a strong candidate for launch.

BYD India has posted a teaser on its official social media channels, prominently featuring the terms "BYD DM-i" and "Super Plug-in Hybrid EV." This is the first time the company has formally signalled its intent to bring plug-in hybrid technology to the Indian market.

The timing is particularly telling, given that test mules of two DM-i-equipped models have already turned up on Indian roads in recent weeks.

What the DM-i System Offers and Why the Range Figure Stands Out

An Electric-First Hybrid That Promises Well Over 1,000 Kilometres on a Single Charge and Tank

BYD's DM-i system is built on an electric-first philosophy. Unlike conventional hybrids that rely heavily on the petrol engine, DM-i prioritises electric driving and calls on the combustion engine mainly for range extension and efficiency support.

BYD describes the technology as "Super Intelligent Efficient Electric Beyond Hybrid." In compatible configurations, these vehicles achieve a combined range exceeding 1,000 km, which directly addresses one of the most common reservations Indian buyers have about electrified vehicles.

The Sealion 6 PHEV Has Already Been Spotted Undisguised on Indian Roads

The BYD Sealion 6 PHEV, a mid-size SUV also sold internationally as the Song Plus and Seal U, was photographed testing undisguised in India just days before this teaser surfaced.

Globally, it pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with BYD Blade Battery technology and electric motors across multiple configurations. Equipment on offer includes a rotating 15.6-inch touchscreen, an ADAS suite, ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and all-wheel drive in higher variants.

Should it arrive in India, prices are expected to sit in the Rs 45 to 50 lakh range.

The Atto 2 DM-i Remains a Strong Contender for Indian Roads

The BYD Atto 2, a compact crossover measuring 4.3 metres in length, has also been spotted on test in India.

Internationally, it is offered with DM-i plug-in hybrid technology and delivers a pure electric range of up to around 90 km alongside strong fuel efficiency numbers. Its urban-friendly proportions, rotating infotainment display, panoramic sunroof, and connected technology could make it well suited to city buyers. Pricing in India is expected to be around the Rs 25 lakh mark.

BYD India Prepares to Step Beyond Its All-Electric Comfort Zone

BYD India currently sells only electric vehicles, namely the Atto 3, eMAX 7, Seal, and Sealion 7, with prices ranging from approximately Rs 25 lakh to Rs 60 lakh.

By introducing DM-i plug-in hybrid models, the brand is clearly looking to reach buyers who appreciate electric driving but remain hesitant about committing to a pure EV, whether because of charging infrastructure gaps or the demands of long-distance travel.

Whether it is the Sealion 6, the Atto 2, or both that make it to showrooms first, BYD India's direction has rarely looked this purposeful.
