Maharashtra Mandates FASTag for All Vehicles from April 2025

The Maharashtra government has announced that from April 1, 2025, all vehicles in the state must be equipped with FASTag to facilitate seamless toll payments. This initiative aims to reduce congestion at toll plazas and promote digital transactions. Vehicle owners who do not comply will face penalties, including double toll charges. FASTag allows drivers to pay tolls without stopping, making travel more efficient. It's essential for drivers to prepare for this mandate to avoid fines and delays.

The rules for FASTag will be changed from April 1 and car drivers must know about it soon.

Changes in rules regarding FASTag have been made frequently. Although it has been made compulsory for all the states, some states still get exemptions for it. Under such circumstances, the Maharashtra Cabinet already declared an official statement that from April 1st, 2025, all vehicles of the state will be mandatory to be equipped with FASTag.

What is FASTag?

It is a thin RFID tag that helps the driver to pay the toll without any inconvenience. This tag is mounted on the windscreen of the car. It is directly connected to a savings bank account. When a vehicle passes through the toll plaza, the toll tax gets deducted from the relevant savings bank account itself, and saves time.

FASTag is available in each bank

Once it is allotted to the vehicle, it can't be moved. Any bank can issue it. It forms part of the National Electronic Toll Collection, or NETC, system. As long as the driver has a prepaid account that is linked with his FASTag, he must recharge his account if he spends all the balance that exists in his account. The residual balance will make the tag get blacklisted.

If the balance in the bank account is low, the FASTag will be blacklisted. In such a situation, the driver will not be able to use the toll-free system. In such a situation, the driver will have to pay cash at the toll plaza. NPCI started the NETC program to make toll payments easier and ensure that the FASTag system works across the country. FASTag will be accepted at every toll plaza.

The FASTag has been designed in such a way that it enables the driver to use FASTag at any toll plaza irrespective of the running company. Hence, due to the FASTag system, the vehicle does not need to stop at the toll booths and, therefore, saves time and fuel also. Therefore, you should also deploy FASTag in a timely manner.
