What is Toll plaza and toll tax?

The toll road is a public or private road for which a toll tax (or toll) has to be calculated for transit. It is also known as the turnpike or tollway/toll tax. It is a generally implemented kind of road pricing to assist recover the expenses of road construction and maintenance. Toll taxes are often collected at toll plazas, toll booths, toll houses, toll stations, toll bars, or toll gates. This contactless process automatically deducts the toll fee from the linked account, eliminating the need to stop and pay cash.

Toll plazas often have multiple lanes, with dedicated FASTag lanes for faster processing and decongesting the plaza. Additionally, toll plazas may house administrative offices, weighbridges for checking vehicle weight compliance, and even convenience facilities like restrooms, restaurants, and fuel stations, transforming them into mini-rest stops for weary travellers. The revenue collected at toll plazas goes towards various purposes, including maintaining the road infrastructure, funding future highway projects, enhancing safety measures, and even financing environmental initiatives. While the concept of paying a fee to use a road might not be universally popular, toll plazas play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning and continuous development of our national highway network.
