JSW MG Motor India has confirmed a new energy vehicle reveal for July 16, 2026, with strong indications it will be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 platform.
The upcoming SUV is expected to offer both plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrain options, targeting rivals such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari.
JSW MG Motor India has officially announced that it will unveil a new energy vehicle on July 16, 2026. While the company has deliberately kept the model's name under wraps, the announcement comes accompanied by a teaser that reads: "Internet Inside transformed the way India drove. Now, it's time to power the next evolution. Join us as we redefine the way India thinks about New Energy Vehicles."
The deliberate reference to "Internet Inside" calls back to the Hector, which made its debut in 2019 and brought connected car technology to the mass-market SUV segment in India for the first time.
A Midsize SUV Most Likely at the Centre of It All
Industry indications point towards an upcoming midsize SUV internally codenamed 520, based on the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in international markets. The model's design patent has already been filed in India, and test mules have been observed on public roads - both of which suggest a launch is not too far off.
The emphasis on "New Energy Vehicles" in the teaser aligns squarely with MG's stated intent to enter the plug-in hybrid space in India, making the Starlight-based SUV the most plausible candidate for the July 16 reveal.
Dimensions and Design That Demand Attention
The Starlight 560 is positioned above the Hector in terms of size and is available internationally in both five-seat and seven-seat configurations. The SUV measures 4,745 mm in length and rides on a 2,810 mm wheelbase. That puts it firmly in the large SUV bracket for India.
Spy shots and patent filings reveal a boxy, upright stance with a prominent grille, squared wheel arches, LED lighting elements and a roof-mounted spoiler at the rear.
The overall design language is noticeably different from anything MG currently sells in the country, and styling is expected to vary between the EV and plug-in hybrid variants.
Two Powertrains, One Platform
The PHEV version combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a battery pack to produce a combined output of 197 hp and 230 Nm of torque, offering an electric-only range of up to 100 km under the CLTC cycle.
The fully electric version uses a 56.7 kWh battery pack with a front-mounted motor producing 136 hp and 200 Nm, with a claimed range of up to 500 km on the CLTC cycle.
MG has not yet confirmed which powertrain will debut first in India, though the focus on the plug-in hybrid segment in the teaser suggests the PHEV could take centre stage at the July 16 event.
Cabin and Features
International versions of the SUV come with a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control and connected car technology.
For India, MG is expected to further bolster the features list to suit local buyer expectations, given how competitive the mid-to-large SUV segment has become.
A Well-Timed Entry Ahead of the Festive Season
The new SUV is expected to make its official market debut ahead of Diwali 2026, going up against the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and Toyota Innova Hycross.
If MG brings the plug-in hybrid variant to India, it would become one of the very few affordable PHEVs in the country, a segment that is currently thin on competition and ripe for the taking.
