The upcoming Tata Avinya X is officially shifting from JLR’s EMA architecture to the joint-venture Chery-JLR Freelander EV platform.
This strategic platform swap aims to significantly reduce manufacturing costs and accelerate the vehicle’s timeline ahead of its early 2027 market launch.
Tata Motors has significantly revised its strategy for the upcoming Avinya electric vehicle lineup. Instead of using Jaguar Land Rover's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), the company will now adopt the Freelander platform developed through the Chery-JLR partnership. The move is expected to improve cost efficiency, accelerate development and help Tata bring its premium electric vehicles to market faster.
The decision comes after plans to locally utilise JLR's EMA platform became commercially difficult for the Avinya programme. By leveraging the Freelander architecture, Tata Motors aims to strengthen its premium EV ambitions while maintaining competitive pricing and advanced technology.
Avinya X to Lead the New EV Strategy
The first production model under the revised roadmap is expected to be the Avinya X, internally known as the P2 project. Reports suggest that Tata has prioritised this model ahead of the originally planned P1 vehicle as it works towards a 2027 launch.
The Avinya X is expected to showcase Tata's premium EV vision, combining futuristic design, advanced connectivity and long-range electric mobility. The vehicle will also benefit from the scalability and modern electrical architecture offered by the Freelander platform.
Furthermore, production dynamics are falling right into place. The Avinya series is expected to be manufactured at Tata’s recently acquired production facility in Chennai, the former Ford plant.
The Avinya range is expected to be manufactured at Tata Motors' Chennai facility, which is likely to play a key role in the company's future premium electric vehicle production plans.
Expected Price and Launch Timeline
With a heavy dose of component localisation alongside a shared architecture, the upcoming premium electric vehicle is projected to arrive with an estimated price bracket ranging between ₹45.00 lakh and ₹60.00 lakh.
Car enthusiasts and potential buyers will not have to wait too long to see the production-ready version. The Tata Avinya X is expected to make its market debut in early 2027, although Tata Motors has not yet announced an official launch date.
Given this strategic timeline, the premium electric crossover is highly tipped to take absolute centre stage at the 2027 Bharat Mobility Global Expo, signalling a bold new chapter for Indian-engineered luxury electric mobility.
