Renault plans to bring the Duster back to Indian roads, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most-awaited car launches in recent times. They will introduce the new-generation petrol models of the Duster and its larger sibling, the Bigster (also called Boreal), by early 2026. Renault has now revealed its plan to introduce strong hybrid options for both SUVs in India.
The strong hybrid versions should arrive 6 to 12 months after the petrol ones. This places their launch around late 2026 or early 2027.
Strong Hybrid Tech – What to Expect
The official details on India-specific hybrids aren't available yet, but we can get an idea by looking at their European versions.
In Europe, the new Duster uses the Hybrid 140 system, which has:
A 1.6L petrol engine making 94 hp
Two electric motors (one with 49 hp for driving and another as a high-voltage starter generator)
A 1.2 kWh battery pack
A combined power output of 140 hp paired with a multi-mode automatic gearbox
It can operate in electric mode for up to 80% of urban commutes.
The Bigster (7-seater Duster) runs on a Hybrid 155 setup:
It includes a 1.8L petrol engine producing 107 hp.
A primary electric motor with 50 hp supports it.
It uses a 1.4 kWh battery.
Together, they deliver 155 hp with torque reaching 205 Nm.
Both setups use FWD and come with automatic transmissions. They are built to switch between electric and petrol modes.
Release Plan and Upcoming Models
Production of the next-gen Duster begins in September 2025, while its launch and bookings should start by early 2026. The 7-seater Bigster/Boreal will have its global unveiling on July 10, 2025 and will go on sale in India after the Duster hits the market.
Powerful hybrid models will arrive by late 2026, while Renault is considering EV and CNG options because of the adaptable CMF-B platform. Nissan, Renault's partner, plans to launch its versions of both vehicles in 2027.
Hybrid Sales Could Outpace EVs
Venkatram Mamillapalle, the CEO and MD of Renault India, believes hybrids will surpass EV sales within the next ten years. By 2032, hybrids might make up 15–18% of India’s total car sales, while EVs could remain under 10%. Renault plans to emphasize strong hybrid models and CNG options, including dealer-installed CNG kits approved by providers such as Minda Westport.
This fresh hybrid lineup from Renault could become a key moment in India's shift toward eco-friendly transportation.
