Maruti Suzuki has crossed 30 lakh cumulative vehicle dispatches via railways, achieving the last 10 lakh units in a record 21 months.
The company is targeting a 35 per cent rail dispatch share by FY2030-31.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has reached a significant landmark in its sustainability journey, cumulatively dispatching over 30 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways. The company describes this as a reflection of its deepening commitment to rail-led, sustainable transportation across the country.
The numbers tell a compelling story on their own. Rail-based dispatches accounted for just 5 per cent of total vehicle movement in FY2014-15. That figure now stands at 26.5 per cent in FY2025-26, a shift achieved through consistent, year-on-year investment in rail infrastructure and capacity.
Most strikingly, the last 10 lakh dispatches, from the 20 lakh mark to 30 lakh, were completed in just 21 months, making it the fastest million-unit addition in the company's rail logistics history.
Rs 1,372 Crore Invested in Dedicated Rail Infrastructure
The scale of Maruti Suzuki's infrastructure commitment makes the milestone easier to understand. The company has invested over Rs 1,372 crore in dedicated green logistics facilities, covering in-plant railway sidings at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat and Manesar plant in Haryana, rail yards at logistics hubs, specialised automobile rakes, and several supporting infrastructure upgrades.
Maruti Suzuki holds the distinction of being the first and only passenger vehicle manufacturer in India to operate railway sidings inside two of its manufacturing plants. The combined dispatch capacity of the Hansalpur and Manesar sidings stands at approximately 7.5 lakh vehicles per year.
Together, these two facilities serve more than 600 cities through 22 logistics hubs, operating on a hub-and-spoke transportation model. Export ports at Mundra and Pipavav are also connected through this railway logistics network.
The Models Moving by Rail
The range of vehicles being transported by rail spans nearly the entire Maruti Suzuki lineup. Models currently dispatched through railways include the Alto, WagonR, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Brezza, Fronx, Ertiga, XL6, Grand Vitara, Eeco, Super Carry, and Celerio.
Key Milestones That Shaped the Journey
Maruti Suzuki's rail logistics story dates back to May 2013, when it became India's first automobile manufacturer to receive an Automobile Freight Train Operator licence. The company flagged off its first flexi-deck automobile wagon rake in March 2014. Since then, the milestones have come steadily.
Achievements
The 10 lakh dispatch figure was crossed in November 2021, followed by 20 lakh in June 2024.
India's first automobile in-plant railway siding was inaugurated at Hansalpur in March 2024.
India's largest such siding was commissioned at Manesar in June 2025.
October 2025 saw the first batch of Maruti Suzuki vehicles transported by rail to the Kashmir Valley.
In February 2026, the Hansalpur siding was registered as the world's first Modal Shift Transportation Project by Verra.

Kharkhoda Plant to Add to Rail Capacity
Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki has set a target of raising rail-based dispatch share to 35 per cent by FY2030-31. Central to this plan is the establishment of an in-plant railway siding at its upcoming Kharkhoda manufacturing facility.
The company notes that expanding rail logistics will help reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel consumption, and ease road congestion across the national highway network.
MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi acknowledged the role of government policy in enabling this progress, specifically citing the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan as a framework that has helped accelerate integrated, multimodal logistics infrastructure across India.
