Tata Altroz iCNG AMT is now India's only premium hatchback to offer a factory-fitted CNG kit paired with an automatic gearbox, starting at Rs 8.70 lakh (ex-showroom).
The car's powertrain output, variant spread, cabin equipment, boot space compromise, and 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating.
There are not many cars in the premium hatchback space that genuinely catch you off guard, but Tata has managed it. The Altroz iCNG now comes with a 5-speed AMT option, and with that, it becomes the only car in its class in India to pair a factory-fitted CNG setup with an automatic gearbox.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Toyota Glanza do offer CNG, but only in lower, less-equipped trims, and only with a manual. Tata has gone further, offering the CNG AMT all the way up to the Accomplished S variant. That is a statement of intent more than anything else.
It is also worth remembering that the Altroz already holds something no rival does, a diesel engine option. Adding CNG with AMT only widens that gap further.
Engine Output in CNG and Petrol Modes
The Altroz iCNG uses the same 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron engine as the standard petrol car. Paired with a factory-fitted twin-cylinder CNG kit, it puts out 73.5 hp and 103 Nm in CNG mode.
Switch to petrol and those figures climb to 88 hp and 115 Nm. The 5-speed AMT is carried over directly from the petrol variants, so it is a known quantity. For city driving, stop-start traffic, crowded roads, the usual urban grind, this setup makes a lot of sense.
Five Variants, and the AMT Premium You Pay
Pricing Across the Range
The AMT option is spread across five variants: Pure, Pure S, Creative, Creative S, and the Accomplished S. Prices run from Rs 8.70 lakh to Rs 10.77 lakh (ex-showroom). The only trim that misses out is the base-spec Smart, which stays manual-only.
Opting for the AMT over the equivalent manual trim costs between Rs 55,000 and Rs 60,000, depending on the variant.
The Boot Space You Give Up
The twin-cylinder CNG kit sits beneath the boot floor, which brings luggage capacity down to 210 litres.
The petrol and diesel variants offer 345 litres, so the drop is noticeable. That said, a twin-cylinder layout is more space-efficient than older single-tank CNG setups, and 210 litres is workable for most day-to-day use.
What You Get Inside
Higher variants of the Altroz iCNG AMT carry a soft-touch Grand Prestigia dashboard in a dual-tone finish. The top trims get a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, both developed by Harman.
Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ambient lighting, automatic climate control, an electric sunroof, a wireless charging pad, and 16-inch alloy wheels all feature on the better-equipped variants.
Outside, five colour options are on offer: Pristine White, Pure Grey, Ember Glow, Royal Blue, and Dune Glow.
Safety That Holds Up Across Every Powertrain
The Altroz carries a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating across its petrol, diesel, and CNG variants alike. Every car in the range comes with six airbags, electronic stability control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and reverse parking sensors as standard.
Move higher up the range and a 360-degree surround-view camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, and automatic headlamps are also on offer.
