Next-Generation Kia Sonet Spotted Testing on Indian Roads Ahead of 2027 Launch

The 2027 Kia Sonet has taken to Indian public roads for testing, giving us our first real look at the next chapter of one of the country's most popular sub-compact SUVs. Spy shots reveal a sharper, more grown-up exterior design clearly inspired by the Seltos, along with a significant platform upgrade that promises to tackle one of the current model's most-discussed shortcomings, rear seat space. A proper generational step forward appears to be on the cards.

  • The 2027 Kia Sonet has commenced public road testing in India, with spy shots revealing a Seltos-inspired exterior redesign ahead of an anticipated early 2027 unveil.

  • The upcoming model will transition to the new K1 platform, a notable change expected to address the rear seat space limitations that have long been a talking point with the current generation.

Kia has quietly set its next-generation Sonet loose on Indian public roads, marking the beginning of real-world testing ahead of what is expected to be an unveiling early next year. The sightings, captured in spy shots, offer a reasonably clear view of the front and side profile of the 2027 model, and what they reveal is encouraging.

A Sharper Look That Borrows from Its Bigger Sibling

The aesthetic direction is immediately apparent. The new Sonet takes clear design cues from the Seltos, adopting a flatter, more upright grille finished with honeycomb-shaped inserts.

Alongside it sits a brand new front bumper with pentagon-shaped inserts on either end of the skid plate, fresh LED daytime running lights, a new set of machined alloy wheels, and revised door mirror designs. A shark-fin antenna and a sunroof are also visible in the spy images, giving the car a noticeably more mature presence on the road.

A New Platform and a More Considered Cabin

On the inside, the next-generation Sonet is expected to feature dual 12.3-inch screens, updated upholstery, and revised dashboard themes. More significantly, the move to Kia's new K1 platform is expected to directly address the rear-seat space constraints that have been a consistent criticism of the current car. Whether the new model will include an ADAS suite remains uncertain.

Kia recently removed these driver assistance features from the Syros, so it is genuinely unclear whether they will make it into the refreshed Sonet. A panoramic sunroof is also being considered, given that several rivals in the segment already offer this feature.

Familiar Engines, Fresh Ambitions

Under the bonnet, no surprises are expected. The 2027 Sonet is set to carry over the existing engine lineup, comprising a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel unit. These will continue to be paired with manual, iMT, and automatic gearbox options, keeping the powertrain choices broad enough to suit a wide range of buyers.

Stepping Into a Battle-Ready Segment

When it eventually arrives, the new Sonet will face familiar competition. The Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, and Skoda Kylaq all occupy the same space. It is a fiercely fought segment, and Kia will need the new Sonet to come well-equipped and well-priced to hold its ground.
