KIA Sonet Diesel Variants - What's Your Ride?
Introduction
Following its stellar introduction in India, Kia's Seltos made its way to every customer's heart in the country. The car established a brand value among its customers and established Kia as an automaker that offered unique features at an affordable price.
However, it wasn't until Kia's second offering, Sonet came into the picture. After its introduction, Sonet became India's go-to mid-size SUV under the most affordable segment. The car was recently updated in India with added features in lower variants, a new colour option, and price revisions across the range.
In this blog, we have a look at the different diesel variants of the Kia Sonet and have a look at the factors that set it apart. So continue reading as we check them out in the following sections.
Pros & Cons Of Kia Sonet Diesel
Pros Of Buying The Kia Sonet Diesel:
Buyers can purchase diesel engines in both manual and automatic transmission configurations.
Delivers the best mileage in its segment with an average figure of 24.1kmpl (for diesel-manual).
The diesel trim comes at a nominal premium of Rs.40,000-50,000 over the turbo petrol-ACMT. Another option of choosing the turbo petrol-DCT automatic comes at a premium of Rs. 44,000 - 60,000.
The car packs impressive looks and features that add to the appeal and value of the offering.
Cons Of Buying The Kia Sonet Diesel:
The variant offers inefficient torque conversion over its automatic transmission's fluid. This factor reduces the official ARAI transmission's km per litre, making it below average.
While the automaker has introduced some features in the lower trims, it continues to miss critical features. The car doesn't have auto wipers, 60:40 rear split seats, and illuminated window buttons, some features we expect from cars in this segment.
Kia Sonet Variants: Diesel Options
The Kia Sonet is offered across seven different variants: HTE, HTK, HTK+, HTX, HTX+, GTX+, and X Line. Across its lineup, the Sonet gets a 1.2L diesel engine and a 1.5L diesel engine with options to pair it with a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, or a 6-speed iMT gearbox.
Talking of the Kia Sonet features, the car gets base features like front power windows, semi-leatherette seats, rear AC vents, manual AC, and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, among others. For the high-end variants, the Sonet gets more features with contrast interiors, gloss black highlights, and wireless charging, among other options.

Now, talking of the price range, the Kia Sonet starts at a price range of around 7.8 lakhs and goes all the way up to 13.89 lakhs for the high-end variants. In addition, the car gets additional safety features like dual front and side airbags, rear parking sensors, and ABS with EBD in its base variants. In contrast, the top specs get additional safety features like front parking sensors with ISOFIX mounts for child seats.
Conclusion
Choosing one definite variant among seven different options can be a tough challenge, especially if it's your first car. However, considering that you prefer diesel engines, there's a definite approach to the selection.
Now, talking of the given options, the base HTE variant lacks several features when talking of the diesel-manual powertrain, while the HTK variant doesn't seem to offer value for money.
Therefore, a better option here would be to go with the base variant and include accessories in their car. However, if you can stretch your budget around 10 lakhs, we think the HTK+ is a fair option.
