India's electric car market is no longer flirting with momentum; it has well and truly found its stride. May 2026 saw the segment collectively sell 26,682 units, registering an impressive 81.2% year-on-year growth over the 14,725 units sold in May 2025, and a 2% month-on-month gain over the 26,160 units sold in April 2026.
The volume gain alone tells a compelling story - 11,957 units added year-on-year and 522 units month-on-month. This follows a strong preceding month in which 23,506 units were sold, recording 75.14% year-on-year and 4.52% month-on-month growth.
Tata Motors Pulls Further Ahead of the Competition
Tata Motors claimed the top position with a 38.75% market share, up from 35.56% in April 2026, selling 10,340 electric cars in May.
To put that into perspective, the company sold just 5,083 units in May 2025, meaning it more than doubled its numbers year-on-year, registering 103.42% YoY growth.
Month-on-month, Tata grew 11.16% over the 9,302 units sold in April 2026. The brand's early and significant investment in electric vehicles is now paying visible dividends, and its lead over the rest of the market continues to widen with each passing month.
Mahindra Charges Into Second, MG Holds Third
Mahindra Auto secured second place with 6,210 units sold, more than doubling the 2,891 units from May 2025 and registering 114.8% year-on-year and 6.66% month-on-month growth, with a market share of 23.27%.
JSW MG Motor came in third, shifting 4,984 units, which represented 8.37% year-on-year growth and an 18.68% share of the segment, though it slipped 8.04% month-on-month.
Maruti's eVitara sold 1,591 units, growing 19.53% month-on-month and accounting for 5.96% of total EV sales. VinFast sold 1,238 units with a 4.64% market share, while BYD showed encouraging signs, posting 10.47% year-on-year growth with 686 units and a 2.57% share.
Hyundai Stumbles as Kia and Luxury Brands Shine
Not every manufacturer had cause to celebrate. Hyundai's Creta EV recorded only 460 units, reflecting a sharp 36.02% year-on-year and 17.56% month-on-month decline.
Meanwhile, the luxury segment quietly put up respectable numbers. BMW sold 352 electric vehicles, up 75.12% year-on-year, while Mercedes-Benz sold 208 luxury EVs, posting a striking 70.49% year-on-year gain and a 76.27% month-on-month jump.
Kia India's EV tally surged from 41 units in May 2025 to 349 units in May 2026, a remarkable 751.22% year-on-year leap. Tesla registered 35 units, Volvo sold 29 EVs, and Citroen's eC3 managed just 22 units - a 82.95% year-on-year drop that saw a mainstream model fall well behind several luxury nameplates.
