MG Astor In-depth Review: Should It Be Your Next Car?
The MG Astor is MG's latest addition to the market and is essentially a petrol alternative to the ZS EV. It boasts a sleeker design than its electric counterpart and offers two engine-transmission options including a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol.
It's also loaded with trendy features that are sure to catch your eye. While the Astor has its strong points, there are also a few downsides to consider. Here’s a comprehensive review/guide to help you make an informed decision.
Sophisticated Looks
The LED headlamps and the 'celestial' chrome grille are some of its most striking features.
However, the Astor's overall appearance is more akin to a sleek crossover rather than a rugged SUV, which might not be to everyone's liking.
The car is built sturdy. The doors, bonnet, and tailgate all have a solid weight to them. The fit and finish are impressive as well.
World-Class Cabin
The cabin's premium feel is nothing short of impressive, with every inch of the interior boasting top-notch materials that feel soft and classy to the touch.
The more expensive trims come with a classy "Sangria Red" colour scheme and a huge panoramic sunroof that floods the interior with light and luxury appeal.
Just spacious enough
The Astor's front seats are spacious, with soft cushioning that provides a pleasant seating experience. Additionally, the back seats have enough head and leg space for taller passengers. Thoughtful features include the three-point seat belt, low centre hump, and adjustable headrest for the middle passenger. Unfortunately, it can be a little difficult to accommodate three adults in the back due to the cabin's narrow width.
Tech Laden
The Astor offers segment-first Autonomous (Level 2) technology.
The Astor also comes with a customised AI assistant, placed right in the middle of the car, which takes care of all in-car functions, and can keep you updated on current affairs.
The user-friendly 10.1" touchscreen head-unit has impressive graphics. With MG i-Smart technology, the car offers more than 80 internet features. What's more, you can access music apps, reserve a parking slot using Park+, and even get information from Wikipedia.
The Astor also gets loads of other features including a panoramic sunroof, digital dials, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, and a 360-degree parking camera.
Loaded with safety
The Astor comes loaded with a host of safety features, including:
6 airbags
All-four disc brakes
ABS + EBD
Brake Assist
Traction control
ESP
TPMS
Hill hold assist
Hill descent control
360-degree camera
Electric parking brake with auto-hold
Heated ORVMs
Adaptive auto headlamps
Rain-sensing wipers
As mentioned earlier, MG is offering level 2 autonomous technology with Astor, a total of 14 autonomous level 2 features.
It's important to note that the Indian-spec Astor hasn't been crash tested yet. However, the ASEAN NCAP awarded the Thai-spec MG Astor a 5-star rating in crash tests. So we can expect the Astor to perform well in crash tests.
Engine and Performance
Potent engines but not diesel
The Astor is only available with petrol powertrains.
The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit churns out 108 bhp and 144 Nm and comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or a CVT gearbox.
A more powerful 1.3-litre turbo with 138 bhp and 220 Nm is also available. It is offered only with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Drive Experience: Fast but not Sporty
Astor's engine is remarkably refined, even the three-cylinder turbo-petrol. It remains surprisingly quiet at both idle and cruising speeds.
The turbo-petrol offers enough zing, however, it feels slower than its competition, and this is because of the 6-speed torque converter, which isn’t the quickest.
Astor's suspension system is designed to provide a comfortable ride quality, and it does an excellent job of absorbing potholes and uneven surfaces. However, you may experience some vertical motion on highways.
Conclusion—Should You Buy the MG Astor?
The MG Astor is a midsize SUV that exudes elegance and comfort, with a relaxed and inviting vibe. Its refined interior, high-quality materials, and robust build quality ensure that your money is well-spent.
If you're on the lookout for a smooth and comfortable ride that oozes luxury and is loaded with the latest tech, the Astor is definitely worth considering.
