In the ever-competitive midsize SUV market, the Hyundai Creta continues to lead from the front. In May 2025, Hyundai sold 14,860 units of the Creta, keeping its top spot safe. Compared to May 2024, this marks a 1% growth, showing how consistent demand is helping Creta dominate the charts.
The SUV’s strong urban presence, multiple powertrain choices, and modern features help it stay popular despite stiff competition.
Scorpio’s Power Remains Strong
Not far behind is the Mahindra’s much-loved Scorpio, with 14,401 units sold across its Classic and N variants. The rugged appeal, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, keeps this SUV in high demand. This translates into a 5% YoY growth from the 13,717 units it sold in May 2024.
The Scorpio’s dual-offering strategy seems to be working well for Mahindra, capturing both traditional and new-age SUV buyers.
Toyota Hyryder’s Sales Almost Double
Toyota’s urban-friendly Hyryder recorded the biggest leap among the top 10. With 7,573 units sold in May 2025 versus 3,906 last year, the SUV has posted a stunning 94% growth.
This rise could be credited to its hybrid options, mileage, and Toyota’s expanding dealership network. Clearly, the Hyryder is hitting the right notes with eco-conscious buyers.
Mahindra XUV700 Moves Up Steadily
Mahindra’s XUV700 also had a positive May, recording 6,435 units in sales — a 28% growth over 5,008 units in May 2024. As the most tech-laden ICE SUV from Mahindra, it continues to impress buyers with features like ADAS and a panoramic sunroof.
The XUV700’s ability to offer luxury, safety, and performance in one package is helping Mahindra tap into newer markets.
Kia Seltos Slides Slightly
Kia’s popular SUV, the Seltos, took a minor dip, closing May 2025 with 6,082 units, down 10% from 6,736 units in May 2024.
Despite this dip, the Seltos remains a solid contender in the segment, offering stylish design and premium interiors. The recent launch of new variants could help it bounce back soon.
Grand Vitara Faces a Big Drop
Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara saw a massive YoY decline of 47%, falling from 9,736 units in May 2024 to just 5,197 units in May 2025.
Though still in the top 10, the SUV may be losing ground to newer and more tech-savvy competitors.
New Entry: Tata Curvv
Tata’s brand-new offering, the Curvv, entered the scene with 3,063 units sold in May 2025. Though it’s a newcomer, it already shows strong potential and could climb the ladder quickly in the coming months.
Mixed Fortunes for Remaining SUVs
- Honda Elevate dropped 6%, going from 1,553 to 1,461 units.
- Volkswagen Taigun fell by 28%, down to 1,126 units from 1,561.
- Tata Safari slipped by 33%, with sales dropping to 1,109 units from 1,661.
These drops indicate challenges these models are facing in terms of either pricing, features, or changing customer preferences.
Overall, May 2025 proved that Indian buyers still lean toward familiar and feature-loaded SUVs. While some brands like Toyota and Tata made notable entries or gains, Hyundai and Mahindra continue to lead the pack. It’ll be interesting to see how the launch of new midsize SUVs shifts this ranking in the months ahead.
