Clarifies that both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) options will be available for the future Tata Sierra EV when it is introduced in 2026.
What is currently known about the Sierra EV's platform, potential battery and motor options, and how it fits into Tata Motors' larger SUV lineup?
In contrast to the current Sierra ICE, Tata Motors has stated that the Sierra EV will be on sale in 2026 and will be offered with both RWD and AWD powertrain configurations from the outset. This makes it one of the only mid-size electric SUVs in India that probably comes with all-wheel drive.
The base version of the recently introduced ICE-powered Sierra with front-wheel drive starts at ₹11.49 lakh.
Under the Skin: Production & Platform
According to Tata, the Sierra EV will be powered by its new Acti.ev+ platform, which is also the basis for the company's flagship Harrier EV. The "multi-layer skateboard" architecture of this platform enables all-wheel drive, quicker charging, and even sophisticated driver assistance systems.
The company's Sanand factory, which Tata purchased from another manufacturer in 2023, will produce the EV variant. Although ICE Sierra assembly is now handled by the plant, capacity is anticipated to grow to support the production of EVs as well.
What We Know: Battery & Powertrain Options
Insiders anticipate that the Sierra EV will take inspiration from Tata's current EV lineup, while official technical specifications are still being withheld. According to reports, it could use a 55 kWh battery, which is comparable to the Tata Curvv EV, or a 65 kWh pack, which is comparable to the Harrier EV, providing options between performance and range.
A 167-hp electric motor is connected to the smaller 55 kWh battery seen in the Curvv EV. In contrast, the Harrier EV's 65 kWh configuration produces about 238 horsepower. Although the battery-motor combination for the Sierra EV has not yet been verified, these choices suggest a flexible EV that can serve both city commuters and adventure seekers.
Where the Sierra EV Fits in the Lineup
When it is released, the Sierra EV will be positioned in the brand's EV hierarchy between Tata's Curvv EV and Harrier EV. The Sierra EV is anticipated to aim for about the middle ground based on the prices of those models (Curvv EV: ₹ 17.49–21.99 lakh; Harrier EV: ₹ 21.49–29.48 lakh).
In doing so, it will compete with models from other well-known brands as well as other current and forthcoming electric SUVs in India.
What It Signifies
Tata Motors appears to be committed to providing a capable, all-terrain EV suitable for a broad range of consumers, from urban families to road-trip aficionados, as seen by the choice to provide both RWD and AWD from day one. The manufacturer's confidence in growing EV manufacturing is demonstrated by the usage of the Acti.ev+ platform and production at Sanand.
However, some of the expectations are still hypothetical until Tata discloses official range, motor output, and pricing information. Before determining if the Sierra EV can strike a balance between cost, functionality, and performance, buyers will probably wait for the whole official specs.
