Our extensive real-world efficiency testing of the Tata Punch CNG across city streets, highways, and varied terrains reveals surprising results that every potential buyer should consider before making a decision. See how this compact CNG warrior performs in practical driving scenarios.
Tata Punch has already carved a niche for itself in the compact SUV segment, and with its CNG variant, it hopes to achieve a fine balance between the rugged appeal of the model and the value of fuel efficiency. But how much of its claimed figures does the Punch CNG deliver in real-world conditions?
Testing Methodology
The testing spanned over 500 km in varying conditions-
Urban City Driving (Stop-And-Go Traffic)
Highway Cruising at Constant Speeds
Uphill Terrain with Full Passenger Load
Combined Cycle with Variable Loads
The test car was a standard production Tata Punch CNG in iCNG trim running on a 1.2-liter Revotron engine, mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. The standard tire pressure was maintained and the air conditioning was running intermittently in the usual operating conditions.
City Driving Results
In really dense urban traffic, the Punch CNG manages a commendable 26.4 km/kg, which is a bit less than the company's claim for 28.06 km/kg but still holds credibility as far as efficiency is concerned. In other words, the start-stop nature of city driving threw up the quick response of the CNG twin cylinders, with hardly any noticeable lag in switching between fuel modes; the auto-switch function was a huge advantage in clogged areas.
Highway Performance
On the open highway at a speed range of 80-100 km/h, we recorded 24.8 km/kg. Although lower than city efficiency, it is par for the course for CNG powertrains, which tend to consume more at sustained and higher speeds, contrary to conventionally powered petrol models. Power delivery from the Punch is decent, but overtaking requires planning, especially on upward slopes.
Hill Climbing Ability
With the occupancy of all seats plus some luggage, the uphill efficiency fell to 19.2 km/kg. Here, the engine had to exert tremendous effort to retain the CNG mode, although the smart switching system would, from time to time, engage petrol mode to sustain traction on steeper inclines. This intelligent fuel management system is a definite crown jewel of Tata's iCNG technology.
Real-World Range Analysis
With its 60-liter water equivalent CNG tank capacity (translating to approximately 10.5 kg of CNG), the testing done indicates:
City-only range: approximately 275 km
Highway-only range: approximately 260 km
Combined cycle range: approximately 265 km
An additional 35-liter petrol tank provides an extended range of security
Practical Considerations
A clever location of the Punch CNG dual-cylinder installation beneath the load floor presents a significant 210 liters of space in the weather-beaten trunk; this is an advantage over a majority of CNG competitors. We, however, found it most uncomfortable when using much of this space with four people for any long-distance travel.
The extra weight of CNG (around 100 kgs) does not affect the handling of the Punch very much. Acceleration, however, does not feel as sprightly as the normal petrol variant. The 0-100 km/h time was roughly dragged up by about 2.5 seconds in the test.
Cost Economics
Now, on running costs, the Punch CNG will set the user back about ₹ 2.2 for every single kilometer traveled, while the petrol variant runs at approximately ₹ 5.6 per kilometer. A typical user driving 1,500 km every month would, therefore, save something in the ballpark of ₹ 5,100 a month. What does this imply? Breaking even with the price premium would occur within about 15-18 months of ownership.
Conclusion
What the Tata Punch CNG delivers is an impressive real-world efficiency that is somewhat shy of the advertised figures, but still enjoys great economic benefits while not compromising the heavy-duty small vehicle's functionality. A smart dual-fuel system, a large enough boot, and good suspension calibrated to handle extra weight from CNG hardware all make this a tempting option for thrifty buyers wanting a tough little SUV.
