The two V8-powered Porsches will be going head-to-head on the track in this article. The Cayenne GTS and Panamera GTS battle it out for supremacy in performance and handling.
Buckle up as we dive into what makes these high-performance machines tick, how they perform on the CoASTT track in Coimbatore, and which one might be right for you.
What Makes a GTS Special?
The GTS badge stands for Grand Turismo Sport, a Porsche hallmark that blends everyday usability with track-ready performance. These cars are like the superheroes of the Porsche lineup—capable of handling daily commutes but ready to unleash their power on a racetrack.
Unlike older GTS models that arrived late in a car’s lifecycle, Porsche rolled out the Cayenne GTS and Panamera GTS early, signaling their importance in the brand’s lineup.
Meet the Contenders
Let’s introduce the stars of the show:
Porsche Cayenne GTS: This SUV defines expectations with its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine, pumping out 500 horsepower and 660Nm of torque. It’s built for families but handles like a sports car.
Porsche Panamera GTS: A sedan with sports car DNA, it shares the same V8 engine but is lighter and more aerodynamic, making it a track-focused beast.
Both cars use an 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering smooth and quick shifts, though it’s not as razor-sharp as Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch system.
Track Day Showdown
To see how these beasts perform, we took them to the CoASTT High-Performance Centre in Coimbatore, a track designed to push cars to their limits. The results were telling:
Panamera GTS: Being 145kg lighter (2,140kg vs 2,265kg), it sprinted from 0-100kph in 3.86 seconds and lapped the track in 1:51.93.
Cayenne GTS: It took 4.46 seconds to hit 100kph and completed a lap in 1:56.84.
The Panamera’s lower centre of gravity and sharper handling gave it the edge, but the Cayenne’s performance was impressive for an SUV, thanks to its active suspension and grippy Nexen tyres.
Driving Experience
Driving the Cayenne GTS feels like piloting a sports car in SUV clothing. Its Porsche Active Suspension Management system makes it corner flat and fast, defying its 2.2-tonne weight. The steering is precise, and the electronic stability control strikes a perfect balance between safety and fun, allowing some tail-out action when desired.
The Panamera GTS, however, is in a league of its own. Its razor-sharp turn-in, confidence-inspiring steering, and immense grip from the all-wheel-drive system make it feel like a sports car despite its size.
The V8’s power delivery isn’t linear—turbo lag gives way to a sledgehammer-like punch, adding a raw, exciting edge. Both cars sound intoxicating, especially from the outside, though sound insulation mutes the roar inside the cabin.
Looks That Kill
Both cars get GTS-specific styling to stand out:
Cayenne GTS: Sports Montego Blue Metallic paint (Rs 7 lakh option) and a GTS interior with Race-Tex materials, red stitching, and red seat belts (Rs 4 lakh option).
Panamera GTS: Shines in Medeira Gold Metallic paint, with a low-slung cabin blending sportiness and luxury.
The Cayenne’s Sport Chrono pack includes an analogue lap timer, a nostalgic touch in a digital-heavy cockpit. The Panamera’s seats are well-bolstered yet comfortable, and its boot is decent, though a spare tyre eats into cargo space.
Practicality Meets Performance
While performance is the focus, both cars offer practicality:
Cayenne GTS: With 234mm ground clearance, 656 litres of boot space, and an off-road mode, it’s ideal for families and light trails.
Panamera GTS: Offers 124mm ground clearance, 478 litres of boot space, and a nose-lift function to tackle speed bumps.
The Cayenne is more versatile, while the Panamera prioritizes sportiness. Both are tailored for Indian roads, where ground clearance matters.
Narain Karthikeyan’s Verdict
India’s first F1 driver, Narain Karthikeyan, took both cars for hot laps at CoASTT. He praised the Cayenne GTS for its fun factor when driver aids are off, saying, “It’s a big car but drives great around the track.” However, he preferred the Panamera GTS: “For a car this big to handle so well is incredible. The steering, feel, and agility—it’s a complete Porsche.”
Which One Should You Choose?
Choosing between them depends on your needs:
Cayenne GTS: Pick this if you want a family-friendly SUV that can dominate on the track. It’s slightly cheaper at Rs 1.99 crore and offers more space and versatility.
Panamera GTS: Go for this if you crave supercar-like performance in a sedan. It’s pricier at Rs 2.33 crore but delivers unmatched agility.
Both are significantly more expensive than their V6 counterparts, but the extra cylinders and performance justify the cost for enthusiasts.
Future of V8s at Porsche
Porsche is heavily investing in electrification, with plans for electric versions of the 718 and Cayenne, and a flagship electric SUV above the Cayenne by 2030 (Porsche Newsroom). However, recent reports indicate a slower transition due to softer EV demand and customer loyalty to combustion engines (Reuters). Porsche’s “double strategy” means V8 models like the Cayenne GTS and Panamera GTS may continue alongside hybrids and EVs for the foreseeable future.
Overall, the Porsche Cayenne GTS and Panamera GTS are more than cars; they’re experiences. The Cayenne offers practicality with thrilling performance, while the Panamera delivers sports car agility in a sedan package. As Porsche navigates the shift to electrification, these V8-powered beasts remind us why pure performance still matters.
