The Skoda Peaq, set for a global unveil on June 23, 2026, is being considered for an India launch in a premium variant.
Skoda is also working on a locally built EV for India, though supply chain and platform requirements mean it is still a couple of years away.
Peaq Could Arrive as a Brand-Builder for Skoda India
Brand Director Confirms the Flagship EV Is on His Radar
Skoda is considering bringing its all-new Peaq electric SUV to India. The Peaq is the largest model in Skoda's current line-up, and while it has not been officially confirmed for the market, the intent from the brand's leadership is clear.
Ashish Gupta, brand director for Skoda Auto India, said, "Yes, it's on my radar. We have to look at the specifications of the car, and we need to bring in a premium car, not a bare-bones car at a high price. So that is what we are working on. My ambition is to have our global portfolio in India next year."
That statement carries real weight. Rather than positioning the Peaq as a volume play, Skoda appears to see it as a prestige product that could shape the brand's image in India ahead of more accessible electric offerings down the line.
Why Skoda's Other EVs Are Not Suited for India
The Epiq, Elroq, and Enyaq Face Challenges in This Market
Skoda's global EV portfolio includes its recently unveiled entry-level model, the Epiq, which retails at 26,000 euros (approximately Rs 28.70 lakh) in Europe. However, its size, range, and pricing are not favourable for India, making it a difficult proposition against rivals such as the Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, as well as the upcoming Tata Sierra EV.
The same concerns apply to the Elroq and Enyaq models. With the range-topping Peaq, volumes are less important, and Skoda could use its flagship to build the brand and pave the way for more affordable electric models, including locally built ones.
Skoda's Locally Built EV Plan Still in the Works
A Local Platform Needs Time and Supply Chain Development
India has always demanded localisation if a brand wants to be a serious electric player, and Skoda acknowledges that fully.
Gupta stated, "If you want to be a significant EV player, it has to be a local play, and that is what we are working on." He added, "That plan cannot be suddenly preponed and brought in earlier because there are several steps, including supply chains, that need to be taken care of."
A locally built Skoda EV, therefore, remains at least a couple of years away, making the Peaq the more realistic near-term proposition for India.
Skoda Peaq Powertrain and Variant Details
Three Variants on Offer With Up to 600km of Range
The Skoda Peaq will be sold internationally in three variants: 60, 90, and 90x, powered by a lithium-ion (NMC) battery pack available in 63kWh and 91kWh capacities. The range-topping 90x variant features two electric motors with all-wheel drive and a combined output of 299hp, while the other variants use a single rear-wheel-drive motor developing up to 286hp.
Skoda also claims a DC fast-charging time of 27 to 28 minutes for a 10 - 80 percent recharge, a top speed of up to 180kph, and a maximum claimed range of over 600km, depending on the variant.
Which variant eventually makes it to India will depend on the final specifications assessment Gupta mentioned. The emphasis on bringing a well-equipped, premium product rather than a cost-cut entry suggests India could receive one of the more capable configurations.
