Renault and Nissan have jointly announced the upcoming launch of two new SUVs, the all-new Duster, and its Nissan equivalent, set to hit the market in late 2025. Additionally, both models are expected to offer a seven-seater variant that will likely be available for sale by late 2026. The alliance offered a glimpse at both models with a joint teaser, shedding light on the shared future trajectory of these SUVs. Sources close to the companies have revealed that the engine choices for these SUVs will initially be confined to two turbo-petrol powertrains.
Turbo-Petrol Engines to Lead the Charge:
The lineup is anticipated to include the HR10, a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, an entry-level powertrain found in the Kiger and Magnite models, likely to receive a boost in power output for these larger SUVs. Moreover, the HR13 engine, a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol unit generating 156hp, was first featured in the Nissan Kicks and the previous-gen Renault Duster. Both engines are poised to be paired with 6-speed manual and CVT transmission choices.

Entry-Level Variant Dynamics:
While an option for a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine might be available in the base models of the new Renault Duster and Nissan SUV, the renowned K9K diesel engine will not be reincarnated. A hybrid powertrain concept is under consideration, although its development costs remain unaccounted for in the project plans.
Platform and Launch Strategy:
The forthcoming SUVs will be constructed on the Renault-Nissan Alliance's modular CMF-B platform, extensively deployed across global models by both manufacturers and Dacia, Renault's sister brand. The platform will undergo significant localization in India to ensure competitive pricing. Characterized by its rugged appeal, distinctive design, and diverse powertrain alternatives—particularly the popular K9K diesel powerplant—the first-generation Renault Duster inspired the midsize SUV category in India. Nevertheless, the upcoming models will pivot towards petrol-only propulsion, with petrol-hybrid systems unlikely. Re-entering the fiercely contested midsize SUV landscape will undoubtedly be challenging, yet the alliance aims to carve a niche through a judicious blend of design, value-driven pricing, and technological innovation.
Timeline for India Launch: Renault and Nissan are gearing up to introduce a Creta competitor, followed by the rollout of the seven-seater versions. The alliance is all set to unleash both SUVs consecutively, kickstarting a fresh product offensive in India by late 2025.
