BMW will begin deliveries of the first Neue Klasse models in 2025 with the iX3 crossover. As foreshadowed by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, it is one of the most extreme design evolutions in the history of BMW. While not everybody agrees with the new design language, it seems that BMW will apply it even to models that won't use the Neue Klasse architecture. There's a new prototype sighting with an X5-sized SUV sporting the unmistakable Neue Klasse style.
This is unusual in that the next X5/iX5, code-named G65 on the inside, will not ride on Neue Klasse architecture. Instead, it will inherit the CLAR platform, which has space for electric as well as combustion powertrains. The next mid-size SUV from BMW will, like its predecessors, come with combustion engine-powered versions as well as electric models under the iX5 badge. Contrary to the test mule-like 2019 iX5, the G65 iX5 won't be a fuel-cell vehicle, but an electric, battery-powered EV.
Prototype more longer than the iX3
The prototype in the images is significantly longer and broader than the iX3 (NA5) we have become accustomed to from earlier spy images and the Vision Neue Klasse X unveiled. The split-rear window, and perhaps subsequently a fourth window on the rear quarter panel section, highlights the increased wheelbase. The headlights and the kidney grille, at least those that we can only surmise are hiding under wraps, were borrowed from the Neue Klasse X design.
More information on this
While it is not immediately clear, the test car spotted by the Arctic Circle has interesting door handles that mirror those found on the Neue Klasse concept vehicle. These are located at the bottom of the door pillars. The new BMW X5 (G65) will begin production in Spartanburg, South Carolina, by the end of 2026.
Although it will remain CLAR-based, the electric iX5 will be equipped with the sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology that was unveiled with the Neue Klasse. The same applies to the ADAS systems, with at least Level 3 autonomy features being available at launch.
Conclusion
The next BMW X5 (G65) is an important step up in design and technology without diverging from the CLAR-based roots. In not taking up the Neue Klasse architecture, it will bring in important styling cues and technological features from the next-generation model lineup. In having both ICE and EV derivatives, the X5 is geared to appeal broadly, and with the iX5 getting to enjoy BMW's latest eDrive and ADAS developments, its appeal is doubly enhanced. Since the start of manufacturing later in 2026, BMW fans have to look forward to a very revolutionary and confident step ahead of the luxury SUV.
