Maruti Suzuki sold around 6.2 lakh CNG vehicles in the FY2025 with an almost 28 percent growth, and the strong-hybrid made up 2.4 percent of the total sales with the 20k units, and Tata and Hyundai came in the 2nd and 3rd spot for the CNG sales.
Maruti Suzuki CNG sales in FY2025
Maruti Suzuki boasts the biggest CNG lineup in the nation with up to 13 models. Except for a mere three cars – Jimny, Ignis and Invicto – all Maruti cars and SUVs are available with a factory-installed CNG kit. As can be expected, with such a broad model range and high demand for most of them, the company has a vice-like hold on the CNG segment.
At the end of 2024, Maruti Suzuki commanded a massive 71.60 percent market share in the CNG segment, followed by Tata Motors at 16.13 percent and Hyundai at 10.04 percent. Toyota, through its alliance with Maruti, also has some presence in the CNG space with 2.21 percent market share.
Maruti Suzuki hybrids accounted for 2.4 percent sales
In its FY2025 sales announcement, the company also made known that it has sold 20,672 units of strong hybrid cars, and these accounted for 2.4 percent of its FY2025 total sales. That's also a 27 percent year-on-year increase from FY2024, and it has been from only two models – Grand Vitara and Invicto – that are available with the 1.5-litre strong-hybrid powertrain.
Tata Motors recorded 35 percent YoY CNG sales growing
While Tata Motors has not disclosed a specific figure for CNG sales, the company has revealed that it posted 35 percent year-on-year growth in sales of CNG cars.
Based on overall volume, Tata Motors is the second-largest seller of CNG vehicles. The innovative dual-cylinder CNG technology of the company addressed a main issue with CNG cars – boot space – and it has now been picked up by competitor carmakers as well.
Tata Motors is also the sole automaker to provide the choice of an automatic CNG powertrain with the Tiago and Tigor.
Conclusion
Maruti Suzuki's supremacy in the CNG segment continues unabated, with one out of every three vehicles sold during FY2025 being a CNG variant. The company's large portfolio, robust market presence, and year-on-year growth reflect the growing demand for CNG vehicles in India. Although Tata Motors and Hyundai are also increasing their presence, Maruti Suzuki's 71.60 percent market share reinforces its dominance. Also, the increase in hybrid car sales indicates a slow transition toward alternative powertrains. With manufacturers concentrating on innovation and sustainability, competition in the CNG and hybrid segments will increase in the years to come.
