First spy shots of a rugged EV SUV based on the Chery iCar V23 have emerged in India as part of JSW Motors’ future model plans.
The vehicle is expected to rival the upcoming Mahindra Thar EV and may be launched following other JSW Models such as the Jetour T2 SUV.
JSW Motors, the passenger car arm deriving from the larger automotive and industrial group, has been quietly preparing its next big move in India. Recently, a heavily camouflaged test vehicle believed to be based on the Chery iCar V23 electric SUV was photographed at the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) facility in Pune, a significant step in seeking homologation and potential launch approval.
This sighting marks one of the first real glimpses of the vehicle under evaluation in India, indicating that JSW is advancing plans to introduce it to the local market. It’s widely expected to follow JSW’s earlier planned offerings, including an SUV based on the Jetour T2 platform, whose timeline has seen adjustments.
Design and Off-Road Character
Under its camouflage, the SUV exhibits a boxy, upright stance that blends modern EV styling with subtle hints of ruggedness. Its bold proportions, approximately 4,220 mm long, 1,915 mm wide and 1,845 mm tall, along with a long wheelbase, high ground clearance, aggressive approach and departure angles, suggest that this model won’t be just another city EV.
The front fascia features distinctive circular headlamps connected by a sealed panel, while chunky bumpers and side steps enhance its adventurous look. Jumping inside, the likely feature list, drawn from global model specifications, includes a large touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and practical storage solutions.
Performance and Practicality
Although exact Indian specifications aren’t confirmed yet, the Chery iCar V23 (on which this test mule is based) offers a range of powertrain options abroad. These typically include rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive EV setups with battery capacities that offer claimed ranges of over 400 km on a single charge, making them suitable for both urban errands and longer journeys.
The interior design prioritises comfort and usability, with features such as powered and ventilated seats, a 7-speaker audio system and multiple USB ports enhancing everyday usability.
What This Means for the Indian EV Space
JSW’s EV push aligns with broader strategies within the Indian automotive industry, where electrification and hybrid powertrains are rapidly gaining traction. This new SUV is expected to sit in a competitive space that includes future rivals like the Mahindra Thar EV, aiming to offer both off-road capability and zero-emission driving.
If the local launch proceeds smoothly, this electric rugged SUV could bolster JSW’s presence and offer buyers a bold, adventure-ready alternative in the growing Indian EV landscape.
