JSW Motors has officially teased its debut SUV for India, a plug-in hybrid believed to be based on the Jetour T2 i-DM from Chery Automobile, setting the stage for a new homegrown automotive brand to enter the market in 2026.
The article also explores the SUV's powertrain, features, pricing expectations, manufacturing plans, and the broader ambitions of JSW Group in India's fast-evolving new-energy vehicle space.
A dramatic silhouette. Glowing LED headlamps. A tagline that reads, "The future is calling. Will you join the drive?" With a striking full-page newspaper advertisement, JSW Motors has made its boldest statement yet. The company is coming to India's passenger vehicle market, and it means business.
The teaser, which appeared in leading national publications in late February 2026, served a dual purpose: it offered the first official glimpse of JSW Motors' debut SUV and simultaneously invited prospective dealers to register their interest before March 11. That deadline alone tells you everything about the pace at which things are moving.
So, What Exactly Is This SUV?
JSW Motors hasn't officially named the vehicle, but the evidence is hard to ignore. The teaser image, with its upright stance, squared wheel arches, circular LED headlamp housings with horizontal light strips, and pixel-style fog lamps, points squarely at the Jetour T2 i-DM, a plug-in hybrid SUV from China's Chery Automobile Group.
The link to Chery stems from JSW's previously confirmed agreement with the Chinese automaker, which operates several global sub-brands including Exeed, iCar, Jaecoo, Luxeed, and Jetour. Of these, Jetour is the most logical fit for the Indian market, particularly given JSW's stated intention to focus on mainstream hybrid and electric vehicles.
The Numbers That Matter
Globally, the Jetour T2 is a monocoque SUV measuring approximately 4.78 metres in length, riding on a 2,800 mm wheelbase, a footprint comparable to many mid-size SUVs already on sale in India.
The India-spec version, however, is expected to be introduced exclusively with the plug-in hybrid drivetrain, skipping the petrol-only variants sold in other markets.
The powertrain pairs a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 154 bhp and 220 Nm with dual front-mounted electric motors delivering a combined output of 221 bhp and 390 Nm.
A 26.7 kWh battery pack is claimed to offer a pure electric range of up to 139 km on the NEDC cycle. Real-world figures in Indian conditions will inevitably be lower, but even a 90–100 km electric range would make this a genuinely compelling proposition for urban commuters.
A Cabin Loaded With Technology
Inside, the Jetour T2 i-DM features a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a fixed panoramic sunroof, wireless connectivity and charging, a 12-speaker Sony audio system, and ventilated and powered front seats. It also gets a full suite of safety technology, including Level 2 ADAS, hill start and descent assist, and a 360-degree camera system. Most of these features are expected to carry over to the India-spec model.
For off-road enthusiasts, the T2 also brings multiple terrain modes and an intelligent creeping mode for controlled low-speed manoeuvring, a feature set that punches well above the expected price point.
Where Will It Be Built, and What Will It Cost?
The SUV will be assembled at JSW's upcoming greenfield manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, with the India-bound version carrying a JSW badge rather than the Jetour nameplate.
JSW is targeting 70%–75% localization at launch, with an ambition to reach full localization over time, partly to navigate sensitivities around Indian import regulations on Chinese components.
The expected starting price is around Rs 45 lakh, making it the most accessible plug-in hybrid SUV in India's mainstream market. That's a segment virtually empty of rivals right now, and JSW is clearly eyeing it with intent.
The brand aims to position the model in competition with the Mahindra XUV7XO, MG Hector, and Tata Safari.
The Bigger Picture, JSW's Automotive Ambitions
This SUV is just the opening move. A second product from JSW Motors is expected in 2027, likely based on the Chery iCar V23 platform, which has already been spotted testing on Indian roads. It's worth noting that this venture is entirely separate from JSW's existing joint venture with MG Motor India.
JSW Motors is charting its own course, and the ambition is nothing short of becoming India's third major homegrown passenger vehicle brand, alongside Tata Motors and Mahindra.
The Verdict
India's SUV market is fiercely competitive, but a well-equipped plug-in hybrid at a realistic price point, assembled locally, backed by one of India's most powerful industrial conglomerates, is a combination that deserves serious attention. JSW Motors isn't tiptoeing in. It's arriving with intent, a full-page advertisement, and a deadline. The future, it seems, really is calling.
