New Mg Astor Review Should You Buy It

New MG Astor Review | Price | Specification

The MG Astor, a trailblazer in the compact SUV segment, combines style with advanced technology. With its futuristic AI features, like the AI-based personal assistant and level 2 ADAS, the Astor offers a connected and safe driving experience. Packed with a powerful engine and distinctive design, it caters to the modern urban lifestyle. MG Astor's competitive pricing adds to its appeal, making it a noteworthy choice for those seeking a feature-rich and dynamic SUV.

Mg Astor

The MG Astor is MG's latest addition to the market and is essentially a petrol version of the ZS EV. It boasts a sleeker design than its electric counterpart and offers two engine-transmission options, including a 1.5-liter petrol engine and a 1.3-liter turbo-petrol. To help you make an informed decision on whether it's a good buy, lets dive into the pros and cons of owning an MG Astor in this blog.

5 Pros of Owning an MG Astor

1. Attractive pricing

MG Motor India has gone all out with the pricing of their new Astor SUV, starting at just ₹10.52 lakhs. Even the top-end variant won't cost you more than ₹18.43 lakhs (both prices are ex-showroom New Delhi). This is a fantastic deal, considering that the Astor is cheaper than almost all of its competitors in the market. Despite being priced so affordably, the Astor's base variant (Style) is the most well-equipped car in its segment. You won't find a better bang for your buck anywhere else!

2. Tech-Laden

MG has always been a game-changer when it comes to technology, and the Astor SUV is no exception - it’s a tech fest inside.

  • The Astor offers segment-first autonomous (Level 2) technology. MG has partnered with Bosch for ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) in the Astor, and the AI technology, 6 radars, and 5 cameras work together to manage 14 autonomous Level 2 features.

  • The Astor also comes with a customised AI assistant, placed right in the middle of the car, which takes care of all in-car functions, keeps you updated on current affairs, and even tries to make you laugh with some hilarious jokes to cure your Monday Blues. How cool is that?

  • And not to forget the in-demand amenities on offer, like a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, digital dials, a 360-degree parking camera, and connected car features.

    1. World-class interior

Prepare to be blown away by the Astor's cabin - it's truly special! The rich ambience is nothing short of impressive, with every inch of the interior boasting top-notch materials that feel soft and squishy to the touch.

But the Astor doesn't stop there - the fit and finish levels are truly incredible, with some design elements reminiscent of certain Volkswagen group models. And if you opt for the higher-tier trims, you'll be treated to a tasteful 'Sangria Red' color scheme and a massive panoramic sunroof that floods the interior with light, elevating the cabin's premium factor to a whole new level.

4. Incredibly Refined

One thing that immediately stands out about Astor is how refined the engine is. Even with a three-cylinder turbo petrol unit, it remains surprisingly quiet at both idle and cruising speeds. It also doesn't get too loud or rough when revved up. Plus, the cabin is impressively isolated from road and tyre noise, so you can enjoy a peaceful ride.

5. Plush Ride

The suspension on the Astor is well-sprung, and it glides over potholes and gaps with ease. In fact, the car's ability to absorb road shocks and smooth out road imperfections gives the impression that you are driving a much more expensive vehicle.

4 Cons of Owning an MG Astor

1. No diesel option

While the Astor boasts impressive power with its petrol powertrains - the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit with 108 bhp and 144 Nm of torque, and the 1.3-litre turbo with 138 bhp and 220 Nm - it's important to note that there's no diesel option available.

In fact, Astor's biggest rival - the Hyundai Creta - does come with a diesel engine, and nearly 66% of all Creta sales are of the diesel variant. So, if you're in the market for a diesel car, the lack of a diesel engine option in the Astor might be a deal breaker for you.

2. Fast but not dynamic

The MG Astor boasts a soft suspension setup that focuses on providing a comfortable ride, and it certainly delivers on this front. However, when it comes to highway driving, the Astor doesn't feel quite as stable as its competitors, and there's some noticeable vertical movement. Additionally, due to its soft suspension, the Astor does tend to roll quite a bit around bends, which can be disconcerting if you are a driving enthusiast.

3. Not the most spacious

While the MG Astor may be longer, wider, and taller than its main competitors, it actually has a shorter wheelbase. As a result, while the interior space is certainly adequate, it's not among the best in its segment.

You may particularly find that there's not a lot of shoulder room if you have three adults sitting in the back. Additionally, the lower-tier models don’t feel quite airy on the inside due to the relatively smaller glass area, though this isn't an issue in the higher-tier models that come with a panoramic sunroof.

4. Misses some key features

Although MG has loaded the Astor to the brim with features, it however, misses on some key features such as ventilated seats, wireless phone, charging, auto-dimming, a paddle shifter (AT), and telescopic steering adjustment. Though not a deal breaker, these features generally hold quite a bit of importance to buyers in this segment.

  • Car category - Mid-size Compact SUV

  • Car brands - Morris Garages

  • Car model - Astor

  • Model year - Astor 2023

  • Ground clearance - 180 mm

  • Horse Power - 138 bhp / 108 bhp

  • Torque - 220 Nm / 144 Nm

  • Price range - 10.52 - 18.43 Lakhs (ex-showroom)

  • Engine options - 1.3-liter turbo petrol / 1.5-liter petrol

  • Transmission - 6-speed manual AT/ 6-speed manual, CVT automatic

  • Seating capacity - 5

Should you buy it?

The MG Astor is an elegant, comfortable midsize SUV with a relaxed, welcoming demeanour. You can tell that this vehicle is truly global. Thanks to its well-appointed interior, premium materials, and solid build comparable to that of a European vehicle, it gives off the impression that you've spent your money wisely. Therefore, the Astor is a serious choice to consider if you want a comfortable drive that feels incredibly luxurious and is packed with technology.
