According to a recent report, Mahindra is phasing out as many as 8 variants from Thar's variant family. Until now, Thar was available in as many as 19 variants, providing a plethora of choices to meet the needs of all types of buyers. By phasing out as many as 8 variants, Mahindra is simplifying Thar's variant family and will provide 11 chosen variants.
Mahindra Thar Convertible Discontinued
The key point of this update is that Mahindra is stopping production of the convertible top variant of Thar altogether. Therefore, the convertible top (CT) variants of Thar that were available in both AX(O) and LX variants have been stopped. It needs to be mentioned here that Thar was the cheapest car in India with a convertible roof.
A glance at Mahindra's website shows that the company has continued to post CT variants (Convertible Top) as well as HT variants (Hard Top). This may not happen anymore. Besides the convertible top variants, Mahindra has also phased out AX(O) 4WD variants and LX variants with an open differential.
Thar Facelift
Mahindra is expected to introduce a facelift for Thar that may go on sale in 2026. We can anticipate it to receive similar changes that Thar Roxx had. We're referring to a new fascia with a reworked grille, new LED headlamps with DRLs, and bigger wheels.
There may be changes to interiors as well, with soft-touch elements, a bigger infotainment screen, auto AC, a digital instrument screen, and more. When it comes to powertrains, the same 2.0L Turbo Petrol and a pair of Turbo Diesel engines (1.5L engine, 2.2L engine) will keep driving the Thar. It may have mild tweaks in its performance with the facelifted model as well. 4WD and RWD versions will be available to provide a broader price segment.
Powertrain and Price of Discontinued Car
These updates are valid for both the petrol and diesel trims of Thar's hierarchy. Since the base AX(O) RWD HT 1.5 Diesel MT is still available for sale, the base price remains at Rs 11.5 lakh (Ex-sh). The same applies to the top-of-the-line LX Earth Edition 4WD HT 2.2D AT variant, which is still available for sale at Rs 17.6 lakh (Ex-sh).
Conclusion
Mahindra's move to simplify the Thar lineup by dropping 8 variants, including the well-liked convertible top variants, is a major change in its strategy. With the brand gearing up for a new Thar due in 2026, these developments suggest a more concentrated approach to meet changing customer tastes. While fans might miss the character of the convertible Thar, the coming facelift has promising news of design, technology, and performance updates that should keep the legendary off-roader fresh and wanted in the future.
