Mahindra Thar Trims Line-up: Convertible Top and 4WD AX Variants Discontinued

Mahindra has significantly revised the Thar SUV’s line-up in India by discontinuing eight variants, including the popular Convertible Top trims. The reshuffle trims the total number of available variants from 19 to 11, ahead of the Thar facelift planned for a 2026 launch.

Mahindra discontinued several Thar variants in India, specifically those that include the scarfed Convertible Top trims and certain AX and LX 4WD derivatives in what could only be termed a massive pruning of its popular lifestyle SUV line. With the new order, the number of Thar variants has shrunk from 19 to 11.

Discontinued Models

The major ones being axed are the Convertible Top options across the AX(O), LX and AT 4WD range, together with AX 4WD trims and LX 4WD with open differential (OD). They were models ranging from Rs 14.49 lakh to Rs 17.29 lakh.

The only rear-wheel drive configuration available now in the AX trim remains with the 1.5-litre diesel engine. The price of the Thar itself remains unchanged, however, positioned between Rs 11.50 lakh and Rs 17.60 lakh, ex-showroom, India.

The Current Line-up and Price List

The updated variant list now comprises only hard-top versions with 2WD and 4WD. Important models that continue to be sold are:

  • 2.0P LX 4WD Hard Top - Rs 15.20 lakh

  • 2.2D LX 4WD Hard Top - Rs 15.95 lakh

  • 2.2D LX AT Earth Edition 4WD - Rs 17.60 lakh

The Next Thar?

Further on, Mahindra is planning a Thar facelift to be internally known as W515, which will likely be launched in 2026. The styling of this facelift model is expected to draw a lot from the Thar Roxx and is likely to include updates such as a larger infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, and sunroof on select Hard Top variants. Mechanically, the facelifted Thar will likely continue to feature the same engine and drivetrain options as before.

While the discontinuation of fan-favorite trims may anger a few, the reality is that Mahindra seems to be rationalizing its lineup for the arrival of a more premium and tech-heavy Thar.
