Hyundai Palisade debuts brand’s next-generation hybrid powertrain

The Hyundai Motor Group is launching a new-generation hybrid powertrain system said to deliver drastically enhanced performance and efficiency.

The Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled a next-generation hybrid powertrain system that, it says, sets new standards for performance and efficiency.

To be rolled out across its Hyundai and Kia brands, this new hybrid system will be available with two petrol engines – a 2.5-litre and a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol – the larger of which was first seen on the Palisade SUV.

The hybrid powertrain also receives EV-specific technologies, including electric all-wheel drive, V2L functions, and regenerative braking.

Important Points regarding the new Car

  1. The New 2.5-litre hybrid powertrain makes its debut with the new Palisade.

  2. The new Powertrain will improve the fuel efficiency by 45 percent and the overall power by 19%.

  3. The new powertrain will power the compact and larger models across both Kia and Hyundai.

The new Hyundai Powertrain explained

The new hybrid powertrain employs a transmission that incorporates two electric motors – one serving as a starter motor and the other as a traction motor, with the latter also serving regeneration responsibilities. This new transmission system can be matched with a variety of internal combustion engines, producing power outputs ranging from the low-100-hp range to the mid-300-hp range.

Hyundai reports the hybrid system's design permits quieter, smoother shifting, less noise and vibration, and a more refined driving experience. It may be supplied in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive versions, the latter employing an extra electric motor on the rear axle.

What is particularly interesting is that Hyundai has even incorporated some EV-specific technology from its E-GMP EV platform into this new hybrid powertrain. These include:

  • A feature named 'Stay Mode', which enables one to use the air-conditioning and infotainment operations for as much as an hour even with the engine turned off, as long as the battery has 70-80 percent charge.

  • It also features vehicle-to-load (V2L) and regenerative braking.

  • It also receives a new system named Hierarchical Predictive Control (HPC), which foresees the driving route and road conditions and chooses the best driving on the route for enhanced fuel economy.

Palisade, the car to debut with a new powertrain

The new hybrid powertrain will initially be available with an all-new 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, and subsequently, it will also be available with a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine. The 2.5-litre turbo-hybrid system employs what Hyundai refers to as an 'over-expansion cycle.' This system deliberately retards the closure of the intake valve during compression to reduce the effective compression ratio of the blended gas in the cylinder while keeping a high expansion ratio during combustion. Hyundai asserts that this method saves power and increases efficiency.

In the Palisade, where this new 2.5-litre turbo-hybrid system will initially be used, the system makes 334hp and 460Nm of torque and is said to return a best fuel efficiency of 14.1kpl. That's about a 45 percent improvement in efficiency, 19 percent in power and 9 percent in maximum torque compared to a standard 2.5-litre petrol engine, according to Hyundai.

Which cars will be provided with the new hybrid powertrain?

Besides the Palisade, Hyundai will supply the new hybrid powertrain in a variety of compact and large vehicles across both the Hyundai and Kia brands. Down the road, the powertrain will find its way into Genesis' luxury vehicles as well.

Conclusion

Hyundai's new-generation hybrid powertrain in the Palisade is a major leap towards making Hyundai more efficient and powerful cars. With dual electric motors integrated into the transmission, EV-specific capabilities, and the intelligent Hierarchical Predictive Control system, Hyundai and Kia are establishing new standards in hybrid technology. The 2.5-litre turbo-hybrid power unit not only provides performance with 334 hp and 460 Nm but also improves efficiency by 45 percent, making it an attractive option for mainstream as well as premium models. With this powertrain being launched across multiple vehicle segments and subsequently in Genesis luxury vehicles, it confirms Hyundai Motor Group's dedication to innovation, sustainability, and best-in-class driving experiences.
