The Indian passenger vehicle market in FY 2025 has exhibited frenzied demand momentum, especially in the SUV space. Industry sales statistics disclosed recently showed the top 25 best-selling cars and SUVs accounting for more than 33.18 lakh units, thereby registering 4.87% growth compared to FY 2024.
Once again, topping the chart was the Maruti Suzuki WagonR with 1,98,451 figures, although there was a marginal 0.86% Year-on-Year decline. Close at its heels was the Tata Punch, clocking 1,96,572 units, which further cemented its micro-SUV favorite status after a solid growth of 15.58%.
SUVs Lead the Charge: Creta, Scorpio, Fronx Shine
In the fiscal year, one of the most important winners has been the Hyundai Creta, which managed to achieve a remarkable growth of 19.72% with the sale of 1,94,871 units. The Maruti Ertiga came at number four with a sale of 1,90,972 cars, a gain of appreciable 27.52%, because of good demand for utility family MPVs.
The SUV portfolio of Maruti grew with Fronx, which posted a growth of 23.37% (1,66,216 units), alongside Grand Vitara with a modest growth of 2.29% (1,23,946). The Mahindra Scorpio (including Scorpio-N and Classic) took off well with a 16.53% growth that hit 1,64,842 units.
Hatchbacks Falter: Swift, Baleno, Tiago Drop
Major hatchbacks had a terrible year. The Maruti Swift was less than 8.03% at 179,641 and Baleno shrank about 14.54% at 167,161. Tata's Tiago also slid 19%, clearly highlighting the fact that it sold 69,234 units as compact cars became a thing of the past.
New and Emerging Winners: Sonet, XUV 3X0, Thar, Exter
Kia Sonet rose to 99,805 units, while the XUV 3X0 (previously known as XUV300) of Mahindra recorded a whopping 81.78% rise, reaching 98,091 units. Thar too was happy news as it received a healthy addition of 30.02% and the new Exter by Hyundai made a stunning debut with 77,412 sales.
Despite a facelift, the Kia Seltos saw a significant 27.69% drop to 72,618 units, showing that not all updates guarantee momentum.
With the growing love for SUVs in India and the gradual shift to value-oriented, spacious vehicles, the sales figures for FY 2025 point to the changing dynamics in the Indian automotive landscape.
