Chevrolet Spark Reborn as an EV – Will It Arrive in India Under MG?
Chevrolet’s Spark, once a popular small hatchback in India, has been revived as an electric SUV for the Brazilian market. This time, however, it isn’t just another budget hatch but a compact, boxy EV that could rival the growing sub-4m electric SUV segment globally.
While its India launch under Chevrolet’s branding seems unlikely, could MG Motor India bring it under its expanding electric vehicle lineup? - Let’s explore.
A Familiar Name with a New Identity
The Spark EV is essentially a rebadged Baojun Yep Plus, developed under the SAIC-GM-Wuling partnership. This is the same global alliance responsible for MG’s Hector, Chevrolet Captiva, and Wuling Almaz, making badge-engineered products a well-established strategy.
Measuring under 4 meters in length, the Spark EV boasts a boxy, upright stance with a flat bonnet, SUV-like rugged claddings, tall roof rails, and all-around disc brakes.
Unlike its three-door sibling, the Baojun Yep, this version comes with a five-door layout and skips the rear-mounted spare wheel.
Inside, the cabin feels modern and premium, featuring:
A twin-screen setup with two 10.2-inch digital displays (one for infotainment, one for instrumentation)
A three-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls
A floating center console for a sleek and futuristic look
Soft-touch dashboard materials with contrast stitching
Leatherette upholstery for an upmarket feel
Performance & Range – What to Expect
The Chevrolet Spark EV houses a 41.9 kWh battery pack, fast-charging compatible, and boasts a claimed range of 400 km on a single charge. Its 100 bhp single electric motor enables a top speed of 150 km/h, making it a practical urban commuter with occasional highway capability.
Interestingly, it also features a DJI-developed ADAS system, suggesting a focus on modern safety features and driver assistance technologies.
Will MG Bring the Spark EV to India?
MG Motor India, now the largest EV manufacturer in India, has successfully built a strong lineup with models like the MG Comet EV, ZS EV, and the Windsor EV. Given the success of its electric portfolio, the Spark EV could be an excellent addition under the MG brand to compete with the likes of the Tata Punch EV, Citroën ëC3, and Hyundai’s upcoming sub-4m EV.
While no official confirmation has been made, the possibility remains high, considering MG’s aggressive push toward expanding its EV lineup. If launched in India, it could serve as a stylish, feature-packed alternative in the affordable EV segment.
