New FASTag Rules Coming into Effect from February 17 – What You Need to Know

The NPCI has introduced new FASTag validation rules to improve toll transactions and reduce fraud. Here’s how the changes will impact highway users.

New FASTag Rules: What Every Highway User Must Know Before Travelling

Starting February 17, 2025, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will implement new FASTag validation rules, aimed at streamlining toll transactions and curbing fraudulent activities. The updates are designed to prevent last-minute recharges from bypassing system restrictions, ensuring a smoother and more transparent toll payment process.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of what’s changing and how it affects FASTag users.

Key Changes in FASTag Validation

According to an NPCI circular issued on January 28, 2025, FASTag transactions will now be validated based on two critical timeframes when passing through a toll plaza:

  1. 60 minutes before scanning

  2. If a FASTag has been blacklisted, hotlisted, or marked as low balance for more than an hour before reaching the toll booth, the transaction will be declined.

  3. 10 minutes after scanning

  4. If the FASTag remains in an inactive or blacklisted state within 10 minutes of the transaction attempt, it will also be rejected.

If a FASTag meets both conditions, the system will decline the transaction with error code 176, and the user will be charged double the toll fee as a penalty.

How This Affects FASTag Users

FASTag accounts are categorized into two states:

  • Whitelisted (active) – Ready for use.

  • Blacklisted (inactive) – Restricted due to various issues.

A FASTag can become blacklisted due to:

  • Insufficient balance in the account.

  • Pending KYC verification with the issuing bank.

  • Incorrect vehicle registration details or mismatched information.

Under the new system, if a FASTag has been blacklisted for over 60 minutes, a last-minute recharge will not make it immediately usable. However, users may qualify for a refund of the penalty charge, if they recharge their account within 10 minutes of the declined transaction.

What FASTag Users Should Do to Avoid Issues

To ensure hassle-free toll payments and avoid unnecessary penalties, FASTag users should:

  • Maintain sufficient balance well before their journey.

  • Update KYC details regularly to prevent blacklisting.

  • Check FASTag status before starting long trips.

By following these simple steps, highway users can avoid delays, penalties, and extra toll charges under the new validation rules. Make sure you stay prepared before hitting the road!
