BMW iX3 Crowned 2026 World Car of the Year: A Historic Win for EVs

The automotive industry has clearly entered a new phase with the BMW iX3 winning the 2026 World Car of the Year title. In a historic moment, every winner at the World Car Awards this year was an electric vehicle, showing a strong shift towards EVs. From the luxury Lucid Gravity to the performance-focused Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, electric cars dominated the spotlight at the New York International Auto Show.

  • The BMW iX3 has won the 2026 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show on April 01, marking a major global achievement for BMW’s new-generation SUV.

  • Apart from winning the main title, the iX3 also received the World Electric Vehicle of the Year award, beating rivals like the Nissan Leaf and Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric.

The 2026 New York International Auto Show marked a major turning point for the automotive industry, as the World Car Awards saw a historic shift towards electrification. For the first time ever, every category winner at the awards was a fully electric vehicle, highlighting the growing dominance of EVs across global markets.

A Double Victory for BMW

The BMW iX3 faced stiff competition from a diverse field of finalists. In the race for the top prize, it beat out the Hyundai Palisade and the Nissan Leaf. This victory is particularly significant, as it represents BMW's second overall WCOTY win, the first being the BMW 3 Series exactly 20 years ago, in 2006.

The awards were decided by an international jury of 98 distinguished automotive journalists from different countries.

It impressed the jury with:

  • Strong performance and driving dynamics

  • Advanced EV technology and efficiency

  • Modern design and innovative interior features

The SUV is powered by a dual-motor setup that produces strong performance figures, delivering quick acceleration and smooth driving.

Why is this a turning point for the Auto industry

For many years, the World Car Awards included a mix of petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles. However, the 2026 results clearly show that the industry has reached a turning point, with electric vehicles now leading the way.

With the iX3 at the forefront, BMW has shown that an electric SUV can deliver top-level luxury, strong performance, and everyday practicality making it worthy of being called the ‘Best car in the world’.

As the iX3 expands into more global markets, it carries the title of the world’s top car for 2026, which will further strengthen BMW’s position in the fast-growing electric vehicle market.
