Volvo Quietly Pulls the EX40 from India, but a Comeback is Already in the Works

Volvo Cars India has discontinued the EX40, a model that has been part of the brand's India story since 2018 under the XC40 name. The move is described as interim, with a comprehensively updated EX40 expected to return before the close of 2026. Alongside it, Volvo intends to introduce its flagship three-row electric SUV, the EX90, marking a significant expansion of its electric portfolio in the country.

- The Volvo EX40 has been discontinued in India on an interim basis, with an updated model expected before the end of 2026.

- Volvo India's EV line-up currently stands at two models, the EX30 and EC40, with the flagship EX90 also set to arrive this year.

Volvo Cars India has confirmed the discontinuation of the EX40, and the model no longer appears on the brand's official India website. The decision, however, is not a farewell.

Volvo has clarified that the removal is interim in nature, with a next-generation EX40 currently under development and slated to make its India debut before the end of this year.

Eight Years of the XC40 and EX40 in India

The EX40 has had a longer innings in India than most luxury EVs.

  • It first arrived in 2018 as the XC40, serving as Volvo's entry point into the compact luxury SUV space.
  • A petrol powertrain was added to the range in 2020, broadening its appeal.
  • The electric chapter began in 2022 with the launch of the XC40 Recharge, which was Volvo's first pure-electric offering in India at a time when the luxury EV segment was still finding its footing.
  • The most recent version was the XC40 Recharge Single, a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup.

This model was subsequently renamed the EX40 in line with Volvo's global rebrand of its all-electric line-up.

Two Models Now Hold the Fort for Volvo's EV Range in India

With the EX40 temporarily off the shelf, Volvo's electric offering in India rests on two models.

  • The EX30, priced at Rs 41 lakh (ex-showroom), occupies the entry-level position and is powered by a 69 kWh battery pack paired with a rear-mounted single motor.
  • Sitting above it is the EC40, a coupe-styled SUV priced at Rs 59 lakh (ex-showroom). The EC40 draws power from a larger 78 kWh battery and uses a dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration, giving it a more performance-oriented character.

A Busy Second Half of 2026 Awaits Volvo India

The coming months are shaping up to be eventful for Volvo in India. Beyond the return of the updated EX40, the brand has plans to launch the EX90 before the year is out.

The EX90 is Volvo's flagship all-electric SUV, built around a three-row layout that places it in a segment with very few competitors at present. Its arrival would represent the most premium electric product Volvo has offered in India to date and signals that the brand is thinking seriously about the full-size luxury EV buyer in this market.
