Tata Motors achieved the anticipated Avinya electric line-up previously revealed as a concept vehicle in 2022, is now expected to enter the Indian market in 2027. Originally planned for a 2025 launch, the Avinya-series launch has lingered with multiple delays. The latest time frame was confirmed by Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, at the Harrier EV's launch event.
The Avinya series will be the first set of Tata's born electric vehicles, distinctly different from current EVs that are adaptations of ICE platforms. Tata is aiming to go beyond previous car manufacturer restrictions on design, packaging and premium positioning with the Avinya series.
Why the Delay? Shared Architecture and Production Challenges
The delay is due to Tata's use of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) as a partner to implement its EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) to produce the Avinya range. Unfortunately, production problems associated with the JLR plant in Tamil Nadu interfered with Tata’s original plans. Tata Motors is now looking into possibly using the EMA platform as a low-cost version or getting a new platform elsewhere.
Despite the delay, the development of Avinya first model (codenamed P1) is in full swing. The P1 is expected to be the production version of the original 2022 concept model, which will be produced at Tata's facility in Sanand, and is anticipated to be priced in excess of ₹35 lakh — placing it as a premium EV.
What to Expect from Avinya: Platform and design
The Avinya EVs will use Tata's Gen 3 skateboard platform which is EV specific and affords benefits such as flat floors, cabin space, and more architectural freedom. Srivatsa said that Avinya will have a styling character that is 'radical' and different from Tata's designs, which were achieved more organically and evolved.
Earlier this year, Tata also previewed the Avinya X at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, a coupe-crossover concept that is expected to be one of the future models in the Avinya lineup (also known internally as P4). The company is reportedly working on five models of Avinya: P1 – P5.
The brand being established will provide a new premium identity for Tata Motors in electric mobility.
