Suzuki Hustler Spied Testing in India: Maruti’s Potential Tata Punch Rival?

Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading automobile manufacturer, has been eyeing the subcompact SUV segment with keen interest, especially after witnessing the success of Tata Punch. With competitors like Citroen C3 and Hyundai Exter already in the fray, it seems that Maruti might be planning to introduce a new contender. Recent spy shots suggest that Suzuki Hustler, a popular kei car in Japan, could be the latest addition to Maruti Suzuki’s lineup in India, potentially replacing the aging Ignis and standing toe-to-toe with Tata Punch.

A Glimpse of the Suzuki Hustler

The Suzuki Hustler, a well-known name in Japan’s kei car market, has been spotted testing on Indian roads, raising speculations about its potential launch. The test mule was sighted in Delhi, and what caught everyone’s attention was its lack of camouflage. Although the Suzuki logo and Hustler branding were masked, the vehicle’s distinct design elements unmistakably pointed towards the Hustler.

The test vehicle sported a light white or silver shade with a dual-tone effect, complemented by a darker gray roof that seamlessly blended into the C and D pillars and the upper half of the rear tailgate. Its design, characterized by a large glass area, a boxy silhouette, and crossover elements like roof rails and body cladding, exudes the typical kei car aesthetics. The Hustler’s flat and upright bonnet, along with its flat fascia, adds to its unique charm.

One of the most noticeable aspects of the Hustler is its compact dimensions. With a wheelbase of 2,425 mm and minimal overhangs, the vehicle’s wheels are pushed outwards, enhancing its boxy yet quirky appeal. This design might seem simplistic, but it’s in line with the kei car philosophy, which focuses on maximizing space within minimal exterior dimensions.

The Interior and Platform

The interior of the Suzuki Hustler is equally intriguing. Despite its compact size, the Hustler’s quirky layout offers ample space to comfortably seat four adults. The vehicle is built on Suzuki’s Heartect platform, which is known for its lightweight yet sturdy construction, providing a good balance between performance and fuel efficiency.

Given its design and platform, the Hustler is a tallboy vehicle, standing at 3,395 mm in length and 1,475 mm in width. These dimensions make it smaller than most of the mainstream vehicles in India, which might pose a challenge if Suzuki plans to launch it without modifications.

Will the Suzuki Hustler Launch in India?

The big question remains: Will Maruti Suzuki bring the Hustler to India? While the vehicle’s compact size and kei car design might not appeal to the broader Indian audience, there’s a possibility that Maruti could introduce a modified version tailored to Indian tastes. Similar to how Hyundai adapted the Korea-spec Casper to create the India-spec Exter, Suzuki could develop an “Indian-ized” Hustler that better aligns with local market preferences.

If launched, the Suzuki Hustler could potentially replace the Ignis in Maruti’s portfolio. The Ignis, once a popular choice among urban buyers, has seen its appeal wane in recent years. In fact, sales data from July 2024 show that even the recently launched Jimny outsold the Ignis, indicating a shift in consumer preferences.

However, there’s also a chance that the Hustler might never see the light of day in India. Suzuki has previously tested global models in India without launching them, and the Hustler could follow the same path. The company might be gauging market response before making a final decision.

The sighting of the Suzuki Hustler on Indian roads has sparked considerable excitement and speculation. As Maruti Suzuki continues to explore opportunities in the highly competitive subcompact SUV segment, the Hustler could be a game-changer if launched. Its quirky design, compact dimensions, and potential to rival the Tata Punch make it a vehicle worth watching. While it remains uncertain whether the Hustler will be introduced in India, one thing is clear: Maruti Suzuki is keen on staying ahead in the race, and the Hustler might just be the vehicle to do so.
