Skoda is set to unveil the all-electric Octavia concept at the Munich Motor Show this September. The EV will be based on Volkswagen Group’s advanced SSP platform, promising better efficiency, performance, and cost-effectiveness. This marks a significant step in Skoda’s electrification journey, with the production model expected by the end of the decade.
Skoda Octavia EV: The Future of the Brand’s Best-Seller
Skoda has confirmed that at this year's Munich Motor Show, there will be a debut for an all-electric Octavia concept, which marks the company's significant step in the reinvention of the Czech automaker towards an electrified portfolio.
While prior expectations indicated that an Octavia EV would be based on Volkswagen's existing MEB platform, Skoda chief Klaus Zellmer has now stated that the new model will be constructed on the future Scalable Systems Platform.
According to him, this was because the SSP was believed to give better performance and efficiency with cost-effectiveness - thus ensuring that the next generation Octavia EV will be a technological powerhouse.
Volkswagen DNA and Performance Potential
The Octavia EV will share its SSP platform with the Volkswagen ID Golf for advanced battery technology, a longer range, and a more refined driving experience. Skoda, however, hasn't revealed information on the powertrain yet, and the concept will come with a clear signal for the direction of technology and design language in the future for the brand.
The concept model, according to Zellmer, will be a test for customer and media feedback to hone the final production edition by Skoda.
What about the production model?
The production-spec Octavia EV will be ready to hit the roads by the end of the decade, almost simultaneously as the Volkswagen ID Golf. The Octavia EV will be a cut in which the electric lineup of Skoda will start to fade into the background of the traditional portfolio of combustion engine offerings by Skoda.
More Electric Vehicles on Skoda EV Roadmap - What's next?
Before the market introduces the Octavia EV, Skoda will offer a few more electric vehicles to its lineup:
Skoda Epiq (2025): A compact, entry-level electric SUV, this model is to be hived off by the Volkswagen ID 2.
Production-Spec Vision 7S (2026): A seven-seat electric SUV that is planned to be something similar to a Skoda Kodiaq, at least equivalent for EVs.
However, it is interesting to know that there are no plans of Skoda to realize its self-version of Volkswagen's ID Every1 New Affordable EV by the German brand in 2027.
Hybrid Models Still in the Mix
In line with this development, Skoda isn't taking all focus from hybrids and combustion models yet. The Fabia, Kamiq, and Scala will be updated so that they can be offered in key international markets, with mild-hybrid engines complying with Euro 7 emission standards.
In addition, more plug-in hybrid models will be joined to the offer of Skoda, after more brilliant performance from the Superb and Kodiaq PHEV schemes. These long-range hybrids are expected to be able to provide more than 100 km of pure electric range, thus letting customers enjoy zero-emission city driving and being able to travel on normal fuel for long distances.
Skoda RS Goes Electric: A Performance EV Incoming
The new RS-badged EV, currently in the development stage, will carry forward the RS performance legacy into the electric era. This model is expected to be sports-oriented in nature and will be a sibling to the upcoming Skoda Epiq, just like the Volkswagen ID 2 GTI.
Zellmer confirmed that RS models remain a core part of Skoda's DNA, and the brand is committed to delivering thrilling models.
Conclusion
With the unveiling of the Octavia EV concept in September, Skoda sets in motion a huge step towards its electrification journey. The switch to Volkswagen's SSP platform promises better driving dynamics, efficiency, and, of course, costs.
The production version will not arrive until late this decade, but the concept will give an insight into what Skoda passengers could expect in terms of practicality, innovation, and driving fun.
Watch out for details as Skoda reveals the concept in September, with the electric Octavia getting its first glimpse in front of the world.
