The ninth-generation Toyota Hilux is gearing up for an India debut, carrying revised exterior styling and a thoroughly modernised cabin.
The new model is expected to share its interior architecture with the upcoming next-generation Toyota Fortuner.
The Toyota Hilux has always carried a certain gravity in the pickup truck world, and the ninth-generation model looks set to raise the stakes further.
Sold in markets like Thailand under the Hilux Travo nameplate, this latest iteration is now expected to make its way to India soon, bringing with it a meaningful generational leap over the outgoing model.
Exterior Design Gets a More Aggressive Edge
The new Hilux largely retains its familiar silhouette but wears a noticeably sharper face. Up front, sleeker LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights stretch across the fascia, connected by a prominent centrepiece that carries bold Toyota lettering.
A new honeycomb upper grille sits above a lower grille that houses an ADAS radar module. The overall look is purposeful and contemporary without abandoning the rugged character the nameplate is known for. A metal bash plate, large alloy wheels, a sizeable rear loading bay, and LED tail lights round out the visual package.
The Thailand-spec Hilux Travo measures 5,320 mm in length, 1,885 mm in width, and 1,815 mm in height, riding on a 3,085 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance stands at 225 mm, the turning radius is 6.3 metres, and the fuel tank holds 80 litres. The India-spec model is expected to carry the same specifications.
Interior Sees the Biggest Transformation
It is the cabin that has seen the most dramatic rethink, and notably, this same interior architecture is expected to find its way into the next-generation Fortuner as well.
Anchoring the dashboard is a 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, complemented by a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a redesigned steering wheel.
Feature List Promises Premium Comfort
The expected equipment list for the India-spec model is extensive. It includes powered and ventilated seats, JBL audio, dual-zone climate control, a Level-2 ADAS suite, auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror, multiple driving and traction modes, a powered rear window for the loading bay, dual gloveboxes, and leather upholstery.
Proven Diesel Engine Returns With Mild Hybrid Aid
Under the bonnet, the new Hilux is expected to continue with Toyota's proven 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine, producing up to 200 bhp and 500 Nm of torque.
Both manual and automatic gearbox options are likely to be on offer. A 48V mild hybrid system is expected to be part of the setup, with Toyota projecting a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 10 per cent over the current model.
Fortuner Buyers Have Reason to Watch Closely
The shared interior between the new Hilux and the next-generation Fortuner makes this launch doubly significant for Indian buyers. If the cabin quality and feature set translate as expected, the new Hilux could serve as an early preview of what Toyota has planned for one of its most popular SUVs in the country.
