Mercedes might be phasing out its A-Class and B-Class models at the end of their current lifecycles, but its future compact line-up will be robust. In addition to the all-new CLA sedan, we anticipate the new GLA and GLB SUVs to enter the mix. Although we know what the next CLA will look like, Mercedes has revealed only one teaser of the mechanically related SUVs, hiding their design.
Powertrain
The line-up will be powered by the ICE and feature a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and a tiny electric motor within the eight-speed dual-clutch auto transmission. The internal combustion engine will be available with various outputs at 134 bhp, 161 bhp, and 188 bhp, while there is also the added boost of 27 bhp from the electric motor. Similar to the existing GLB, both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models will be available.
And, naturally, an AMG performance variant is in the pipeline, probably with some level of hybrid support for additional power and efficiency.
Future Cars to follow new Architecture
Mercedes' entire future range of compact cars will be built on the new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, which is ICE and EV-powertrain-friendly. We already know that most of the possibilities for the forthcoming CLA are set to end up under the GLB bonnet. The all-electric variants to replace the EQB down the line may get the choice of a rear-mounted electric motor of 268 bhp or a dual-motor arrangement of 375 bhp. The EV is expected to come in 58 kWh and 85 kWh battery pack options, though its driving range will be less than the 750km the more streamlined CLA promises.
Conclusion
The future Mercedes-Benz GLB SUV looks to be an important leap ahead for the brand's compact SUV lineup. Combining a dose of updated styling cues, increased features, and a flexible selection of powerplants—including mild-hybrid and plug-in electric forms—the new GLB is certain to attract a broad spectrum of buyers. Based on the cutting-edge MMA platform, it gives a preview of what the future holds for Mercedes' compact cars, reconciling performance, sustainability, and innovation. Whether you want a robust family SUV or a performance-biased AMG version, the new GLB is promising to deliver when it finally arrives later next year.
