A hatchback by the new MG4 name has been unveiled and regulated in China. It was found to be bigger than the older one and also redesigned. This new grooming idea might mean the company will start with its entry-level EV afresh since the current MG4 figures are very unimpressive in China.
MG was an erstwhile British carmaker bought by the state-owned SAIC Motor House that was incorporated in 2005. The EVs have not gained much fame in China, but these are great hits in places like India, Thailand, and the EU.
The dimensions of the new hatchback are 4395/1842/1551 mm (length/width/height), with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. For comparison, the previous MG4's dimensions are 4287/1836/1516 mm, andit has a wheelbase of 2,705 mm. The new MG4 is larger in all directions -108 mm longer, and its wheelbase is 45 mm longer. Thus reliably indicating that this isn't a simple facelift but the new model.
In addition, there are front, door, and rear reworks, including overhauling the greenhouse (structure between A and C pillars). Overall it looks like the design borrowed from MG3 but scaled up, with a few elements from Cyberster.
In the rear, the MG4 features a wide light strip and an arrow effect on the lights.

The new MG4 is powered by a TZ180XS1001 electric motor with a peak output of 120 kW, a top speed of 160 km/h, and a curb weight of 1485 kg.
Compared to that, the new MG4 boasts a slightly more powerful 125-kW motor but weighs 1,641 kg.
The pack will be a lithium iron phosphate battery from Rept Battery Energy. Its capacity has not yet been disclosed.
The information comes from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which issues a monthly list of vehicles for approval. No car is allowed in the Chinese market without MIIT approval while being on the list is among the final stages before entering the market.
To add to the confusion, MG has applied for two other badges for this car - MG3 and E5. Automakers often do this to either confuse people or they really are just unsure of the final name so it is better to have more options.
MG4 has not sold well in China, starting deliveries in mid-2022 and showing some initial success before falling away again with the turn of the year. Such is the brutally competitive world out there in the Chinese EV war. And no wonder, for an entry-level hatchback, MG4 competes against BYD Dolphin, the Wuling Bingo, or Geely Geely Xingyuan. The number of MG4s sold in China in February was just 13
In February, the global sales of the MG brand amounted to 7,002 cars in China, which were 17.6% more than last year. The deliveries were powered by MG5, which was responsible for 75% of MG sales; the sales of the other 20% were contributed by a new MG7. Both are ICE vehicles.
