In India, the Tata Nexon has become a sub-4-meter SUV with the sales of 8 lakh units sold in the domestic market. Launched in 2017, the Nexon has made itself the most successful SUV name in the number of sales for Tata. By continuing with this pace of sales, the Nexon would hit the million mark by 2026.
The Nexon debuted in India with robust numbers. For tapering purposes, the beginning was with a 27,547 sales number in FY2016 and reached numbers of 1,46,723 units by FY2025 (till February).
In June 2021, the first two lakhs took around 45 months to complete the level. The next took not more than a little over 16 months by October 2022.
Market and Sales Performance of Nexon
In six months, Nexon reached its first half a million sales. It then recorded seven months each to cross both the six-lakh and seven-lakh total sales milestones, passing the marks by July 2024.
Based on SIAM and industry estimates, Nexon will achieve the 8-lakh cumulative sales figure by February 2025.
It took about seven years and five months. For three years in a row-from FY2022 to FY2024-Nexon has been awarded "best selling SUV"; the highest number of sales occurred in FY2023 when 172,138 units were sold.
Boost for the Tata PV Segment
Nexon has bigger dreams for Tata as far as the passenger vehicle segment is concerned. It added 13.10% to the total PV sales of Tata in FY2018, gradually falling during the Covid period but rebounding with 33.26% in FY2022.
Currently ranked as the third most popular sub-4-meter SUV, Nexon lies behind Maruti Fronx and Maruti Brezza. It lies seventh in all best-selling utility vehicles.
Future Prospects for Tata Nexon
Tata's next-gen version of Nexon is not far off from being developed under the codename Garud. The former is expected to be launched with major external and internal changes and with improved and more equipment offerings on the updated X1 platform, which has been used since Indica days (1998-2018), in 2027.
The coming version is expected to carry over petrol and CNG engines since the diesel engines will face stricter emission rules very soon. New rivals like Hyundai Venue or Maruti Brezza constantly create challenges over its segment.
The current model received significant updates both in 2020 and last year during the refresh cycle (2023). As Tata strives to reaffirm its place at market leadership through internal efforts such as these to promote future iterations of their flagship compact SUV, "Nexons" will not only sustain but continue adding to the past successes achieved thus far across India's automotive landscape.
