Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are rapidly becoming a standard feature in modern vehicles, significantly enhancing driving safety by using cameras and radar sensors to prevent collisions. Once exclusive to luxury cars, ADAS technology has become more accessible in mass-market vehicles, with models like the Mahindra XUV700, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Tata Harrier incorporating these advanced features. This trend highlights a significant shift over the past few years towards improving the safety of Indian cars.
Despite being one of the leading automakers in India, Maruti Suzuki has not yet introduced ADAS in its extensive product lineup, which ranges up to Rs 30 lakh. However, this is set to change. Maruti Suzuki recently confirmed plans to offer ADAS in its vehicles, specifically tailored for the unique driving conditions in India.
Why the Delay?
Although Suzuki offers ADAS in its cars globally, in countries like Japan and the UK, introducing this technology in India presents unique challenges. Implementing ADAS here requires extensive training and fine-tuning to ensure its optimal functionality. The system must accurately detect a wide variety of vehicles commonly found on Indian roads, including motorcycles, three-wheelers, tricycles, and even unlit vehicles.
India's challenging environmental conditions, such as dust, dirt, fog, and smog, especially in northern states, pose significant hurdles for ADAS components like cameras and radar. Additionally, unmarked lanes and inconsistent road discipline further complicate the implementation of ADAS in India. The system must also be capable of detecting individuals wearing traditional clothing like kurtas, sarees, and dhotis.
Maruti Suzuki is working on adapting these advanced safety features to perform effectively even in congested Indian streets. The company aims to ensure that ADAS can navigate the complexities of Indian road conditions, enhancing overall driving safety.
ADAS on More Affordable Models
Rumors of Maruti Suzuki introducing ADAS soon were fueled by sightings of a test mule of the 2024 Swift equipped with a blind spot detection system. This indicates that Maruti might offer ADAS in its more affordable models, not just its premium and flagship products. Future models like the Maruti Grand Vitara and Maruti Invicto could also feature this advanced safety technology.
eVX Likely to Be the First Maruti to Get ADAS
While Maruti Suzuki hasn't confirmed which models will first receive ADAS, it is expected that the eVX electric SUV will be the pioneer. A test mule of the eVX was already spotted with a radar module, suggesting that this model will debut Maruti's ADAS offerings.
This move marks a significant step forward for Maruti Suzuki in enhancing vehicle safety and aligning with global automotive safety standards. With the introduction of ADAS, Maruti aims to provide Indian consumers with advanced, reliable, and safe driving experiences.
