A long time back, Maruti's Dzire and Honda's Amaze completed the compact sedan category. The models might not require an introduction - they are practical, economical, and comfortable. However, in the real world, only one car has some serious mileage and the other has completely different figures.
We have taken these two automatic versions of both the sedans and subjected them to real-life Indian driving conditions - urban traffic and highway cruising give you this real-world mileage comparison, which may be a decisive factor in your buying decision.
Engines & Transmissions: Different Systems
Both sedans will have similar specs on paper- 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines-however, a significant difference comes in the tuning of the powertrains. The Honda Amaze is meant to produce a power of 89 bhp and torque of 110 Nm with the help of a four-cylinder engine coupled to an automatic transmission (CVT).
The variant, in contrast, comes with a three-cylinder engine coupled with a 5-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission), giving 80 bhp and 112 Nm of torque.
The Dzire may not appear appealing, however, its simple working pays off in good fuel economy.
Town & Highway Mileage Data Test
In our real-world testing, the Honda Amaze CVT was able to achieve 10.7 kmpl under city conditions and had a highway mileage of 15.6 kmpl. It was way smoother, more refined, and offered a much more pleasant overall driving experience, especially in stop-and-go situations.
Maruti Dzire AMT, however, knocked all out with fuel efficiency scoring well, with 14.1 kmpl in city and 19.42 kmpl in highway driving-thus topping the Amaze by a huge margin.
Final Verdict: Luxury or Liberalism?
If refinement is a key criterion for you, the Amaze has a creamy CVT and a four-cylinder engine. But if mileage matters more, then the lightweight, simplified configuration gives the Dzire the title of mileage king in this segment. For long hires or budget buyers, this round goes to the Dzire AMT.
