Hyundai Tests Hydrogen Car in India: A Cool Ride to the Future

Hyundai’s Nexo hydrogen SUV is hitting Indian roads for a two-year test. It aims to bring eco-friendly driving to millions with style and zero emissions.

Hyundai is planning to bring its Nexo hydrogen car to India. Teaming up with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil), Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is putting this futuristic SUV through a massive two-year test across India’s crazy roads. They’re clocking 40,000 kilometers to see if this clean machine can handle everything from dusty villages to jam-packed cities. Let’s see more about it.

What’s the Hyundai Nexo All About?

The Nexo isn’t your regular ride. It’s a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), which means it uses hydrogen gas to make electricity and power its motor. No smoke, no fumes—just water vapor coming out of the tailpipe.

This sleek SUV packs a 95 kW fuel cell and a 40 kW battery, pumping out 135 kW—or about 183 horsepower. It can zoom from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds and go up to 666 kilometers on one tank. Oh, and refueling? Done in just 5 minutes—way quicker than charging an electric car.

Inside, it’s loaded with cool stuff: vegan leather seats, dual digital screens, a 360-degree camera, and even driver-assist tech like lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control. Plus, it’s got a trick up its sleeve—it cleans the air while driving! Its filter sucks up tiny dirt particles, making the outside air fresher. Talk about a win-win!

How Does This Hydrogen Magic Work?

So, how does the Nexo turn hydrogen into horsepower? It’s got a mini power plant under the hood called a fuel cell. Here’s the simple version: hydrogen from the tank mixes with oxygen from the air. They dance together in a chemical reaction that spits out electricity and water. That electricity powers the motor, and the water, just harmless vapor, drips out. No pollution, no guilt, just a smooth, clean ride. It’s like science fiction, but real!

Why’s This Test a Big Deal?

India’s got big dreams of cutting down pollution and ditching fossil fuels, and hydrogen might just be the ticket. Hyundai and IndianOil are putting the Nexo through a 40,000-kilometer, two-year workout to see if it’s tough enough for India’s wild roads.

Think monsoon rains, scorching heat, and bumper-to-bumper traffic—the Nexo’s facing it all. IndianOil is collecting data on how long it lasts, how reliable it is, and how well it runs in real life. If it passes with flying colors, hydrogen cars could roll out for millions of Indians, making driving cleaner and greener.

Hyundai’s boss in India, Unsoo Kim, says it’s all about bringing smart, future-ready tech to the table. IndianOil’s Alok Sharma agrees, calling hydrogen a superstar in India’s clean energy plans. This isn’t just about one car—it’s about changing the game.

What’s Next for Hydrogen in India?

If the Nexo nails this trial, it’s not just cars that could go hydrogen. Imagine buses, trucks, even trains running on this stuff—zero emissions everywhere! But there’s work to do. India needs hydrogen pumps, like gas stations, but cooler, and that’s a big project. It’ll take cash and teamwork from companies and the government. Plus, making hydrogen with solar or wind power is key to keeping it truly green.

The good news? The Indian government’s already on board, slashing taxes on hydrogen vehicles from 28% to 12%. Pair that with Hyundai’s bold moves, and we might see hydrogen pumps popping up sooner than you think.
