Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), a pioneer in India's new-age automobile history, is celebrating its 29th Foundation Day on May 6, 2025, with nearly three decades of innovation, growth, and social responsibility. The company has sold over 12.7 million units since its inception in 1996, including 3.7 million units exported to 150+ countries, establishing it as a global manufacturing hub.
Foundation to Future: From Santro to Ioniq 5
Hyundai’s journey began in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, with India’s first integrated car manufacturing plant outside Korea. Since production started in 1998, Hyundai has delivered some of India's most beloved models—from the game-changing Santro, to segment leaders like the Creta, and now the premium electric Ioniq 5.
Backed by a $6 billion investment, HMIL has continually expanded its manufacturing, R&D, and product portfolio, aligning with India’s evolving mobility needs.
Talegaon Plant and Production Expansion
To meet surging demand, Hyundai is all set to begin operations at a new manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra, by Q4 of 2025. This will take HMIL’s total annual capacity to 1 million units, reinforcing India’s importance in Hyundai’s global roadmap. Simultaneously, Rs 1,500 crore is being invested to upgrade its existing Chennai plant.
Driving Global and Local Impact
India now contributes 18.5% to Hyundai’s global sales volume, a testament to its strategic importance. Hyundai has remained India’s top passenger car exporter since its inception, hitting key milestones like 0.5 million exports in 2008 and 3.7 million by 2025.
Hyundai’s Commitment to Society: #SeedsofGood
In association with the Hyundai Motor India Foundation, over Rs 400 crore has been invested in CSR activities in the areas of environment, mobility, and livelihood development. These activities have positively impacted over 2 million lives annually, with over Rs 40 crore worth of income opportunities being created for the local community.
As it enters its 30th year, Hyundai India promises to continue the culture of innovation, sustainability, and customer mania, shaping India's mobility future—on and off the road.
