In a landmark decision that would pave the way for easy toll payments on highways, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has come up with a new FASTag annual pass scheme for private vehicle owners, costing ₹3,000. The pass shall be valid for a period of one year from the date of activation or 200 trips, whichever is earlier in consideration. Being the first of its kind, this scheme shall be implemented from August 15, 2025.
What is the New FASTag Annual Pass?
Conceptually resembling an annual OTT subscription, this newly initiated pass allows that with a one-time payment of ₹3,000, private cars can travel all over the vast National Highway network of India without having to worry about recharging their FASTag account now and then.
This pass provides for seamless toll access across the country irrespective of state boundaries, and it is meant for only private, non-commercial vehicles.
Why this pass matters?
It is cheaper, and that is the real gain of this scheme. A toll trip on average comes to ₹80 to ₹100. Under this new scheme, the trip has been discounted to ₹15, so it is a big saving for heavy highway users, mainly those who commute and travel on National Highways daily.
How to Get the Annual Pass
According to Gadkari, the Rajmargyatra mobile app, along with a dedicated link on the MoRTH or NHAI website, will soon operationalize applications for the pass, both new and renewal. The system is being designed for quick digital facilitation for vehicle owners in a user-friendly manner.
More Subscription Plans to Follow
While this ₹3,000/200-trip plan is the first one, Gadkari hinted at other subscription levels being offered later to meet the requirements of various sets of users. That should make the system much more flexible, perhaps attracting several more users to FASTag. If highway travel in India continues to see a rise, this pass could really become the next big thing, benefiting millions of car users in cost-saving and easy traveling.
