Citroen Basalt Heads to South Africa as Stellantis India Hits 10,000 Export Milestone

Stellantis India has flagged off the first shipment of the Citroen Basalt from its Chennai plant to South Africa, marking a significant milestone for the French carmaker's Indian manufacturing operations. The Basalt joins three other Citroen models already being exported from India, further cementing the country's role as a key production hub within the Stellantis global network.

  • The Citroen Basalt becomes the fourth Citroen model exported from India, with the first shipment destined for South Africa.

  • Stellantis India's cumulative Citroen exports to South Africa have reached 10,000 units with this latest consignment.

India's Chennai Plant Sends Off the Basalt's First Export Batch

Stellantis India has officially begun exporting the Citroen Basalt from its manufacturing facility in Chennai, with the first consignment flagged off for South Africa. This shipment also carries a broader significance; it pushes Stellantis India's total Citroen exports to South Africa past the 10,000-unit mark, a milestone that speaks to the growing stature of India as a reliable production base for the global automotive group.

The Basalt is not the first Citroen to make the journey overseas from Indian shores. The C3, eC3, and Aircross have already been finding their way to ASEAN markets for a while now. With the Basalt added to the mix, Stellantis India's export portfolio is looking decidedly more substantial.

What South Africa Gets, and What It Does Not

Buyers in South Africa will find the Basalt available in two trim levels, Plus and Max. However, the South African specification falls short of what Indian customers enjoy.

Features such as cooled front seats, a 360-degree camera, and a wireless charger are all absent from the export version.

The mechanical story, too, is a simpler one. Unlike in India, where buyers can choose between a naturally aspirated and a turbocharged petrol engine, the South African Basalt is offered solely with the turbo petrol motor, paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. It is a more focused, stripped-back package suited to that market's specific demands.

What This Milestone Means for Stellantis India

Shailesh Hazela, CEO and Managing Director of Stellantis India, described the development as an affirmation of the company's manufacturing credentials. He stated that commencing Basalt exports to South Africa strengthens Stellantis India's position as a competitive, quality-driven manufacturing and sourcing base, and that growing export volumes reflect the company's commitment to building a resilient, integrated ecosystem spanning vehicles and components alike. In his view, this milestone reinforces India's expanding contribution to Stellantis' global operations.

It is a sentiment that carries weight. India has steadily grown into a credible export hub for several global automakers, and Stellantis reaching five figures in cumulative Citroen shipments to a single market is a tangible demonstration of that trend taking root.
