Volkswagen ID Polo Unveiled as the First-Ever Electric Version of the Iconic Hatchback

Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off the ID Polo, marking a historic milestone for one of the world's most recognisable hatchbacks. Built on the MEB+ platform and offered in three power outputs, the ID Polo arrives with two battery options, a range of up to 282 miles, a thoroughly redesigned interior, and pre-sales already open in overseas markets as of April 2026, signalling a bold new electric chapter for the beloved nameplate.

  • Volkswagen has revealed the ID Polo as the first all-electric Polo, riding on the MEB+ platform with three power outputs, two battery chemistries, and a maximum WLTP range of 282 miles.

  • The ID Polo debuts Volkswagen's Pure Positive design language alongside a thoroughly refreshed interior, with pre-orders now open in Germany from approximately ₹27.8 lakh.

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the ID Polo, the first fully electric version of its long-running Polo hatchback. A completely new development unrelated to the combustion-engine Polo, it is available exclusively with front-wheel drive and is built on the Volkswagen Group's updated MEB+ platform.

A New Design Language Makes Its Global Debut

The ID Polo is notable not just for its electric powertrain, but also for being the very first Volkswagen model to adopt the brand's new Pure Positive design language. It measures 4,053mm in length, 1,816mm in width, 1,530mm in height, and rides on a 2,600mm wheelbase.

Up front, connected LED headlights with eyelid-style daytime running lights and an illuminated Volkswagen logo give the car a distinctly modern face, while the bumper incorporates an air dam, vertically-oriented intakes, and a subtle front splitter.

Sporty Flanks, a Golf-Inspired C-Pillar, and Wheels Up to 19 Inches

Along the sides, prominent body creases and flared fenders lend the car a sporty stance, and Volkswagen has drawn design inspiration from its own heritage, with the C-pillar's shape taking clear cues from the original Golf.

Buyers can specify alloy wheels up to 19 inches. At the rear, a wraparound LED light bar spans the full width of the tailgate with an illuminated Volkswagen motif, accompanied by a prominent roof spoiler, small vertical air exits, and a diffuser-inspired bumper.

Three Power Outputs and Two Battery Chemistries

The ID Polo will be available with three power outputs: 85 kW (114 hp), 99 kW (133 hp), and 155 kW (208 hp). The 85 kW and 99 kW versions come fitted with a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, whilst the 155 kW variant is powered by a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery. The entry-level LFP battery offers an estimated range of up to 204 miles, while the larger NMC pack pushes that figure to a maximum of 282 miles on the WLTP cycle.

Fast Charging Times That Would Have Seemed Remarkable Just a Few Years Ago

Using DC fast charging, the smaller 37 kWh battery can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 23 minutes, while the 52 kWh battery version takes approximately 24 minutes. Both variants also support 11 kW AC charging as standard. The ID Polo additionally benefits from Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) as standard, effectively serving as a mobile power bank with an output of up to 3.6 kW.

An Interior That Listens to What Drivers Actually Want

Inside, Volkswagen has made a conscious effort to address criticisms levelled at its previous electric models. The interior features a 10-inch Digital Cockpit display paired with a 13-inch Innovision infotainment screen. Based on customer feedback, Volkswagen has brought back physical buttons for climate control and other functions, located below the infotainment screen and on the steering wheel. The ID Polo also features a new retro display mode that gives the digital displays the look and feel of the original Golf I.

Practicality That Punches Well Above Its Class

The electric Polo offers 25 per cent more luggage space than the petrol model, with a 441-litre boot. With the rear seats folded down, that capacity increases to 1,243 litres. Optional equipment includes a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic glass roof, and massaging front seats, which Volkswagen claims is a first in this segment.

Three Trim Levels at Launch, with a GTI on the Way

At launch, the ID Polo is offered in three trim levels: Trend, Life, and Style. All variants come with blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist as standard. A high-performance GTI version is also planned, delivering 166 kW (223 hp), and is expected to join the range later in 2026. With the petrol-powered Polo set to continue alongside it, the ID Polo marks the beginning of what Volkswagen clearly hopes will be a new and accessible era of electric motoring, one nameplate at a time.
