A game-changing toll policy is on the horizon for Indian highway users, particularly those using FASTag.
As per the latest updates from government sources, the new toll framework is nearly finalized and promises significant cost savings, smoother travel, and a more transparent tolling system across national and state expressways.
What’s Changing for FASTag Users?
Under the proposed new structure, private car owners could soon enjoy unlimited travel across India's expressways and highways with an annual pass priced at ₹3000.
This pass would be valid on:
National highways
State expressways
Other toll road networks
The pass would be linked directly to the FASTag account, removing the need for separate documentation or additional tags. Once activated, toll charges would not be deducted for an entire year, regardless of how many kilometers are driven.

Key Highlights of the New Toll Policy
Fixed Toll Rate Per Km: Instead of the traditional toll plaza-based system, the new policy will charge based on a uniform rate of around ₹0.50 per kilometer.
Annual Pass at ₹3000: Private vehicles can opt for a one-time yearly payment that allows unlimited toll-free travel.
No More Toll Booths: Over time, toll booths may be phased out entirely to promote barrier-free electronic tolling, enabled by automatic vehicle detection and GPS tracking.
No Lifetime Pass (for now): Earlier proposals to offer a 15-year pass for ₹30,000 were dropped due to disagreements among stakeholders.
Why Was This Needed?
Currently, monthly passes benefit mostly local commuters. But with India’s rapidly expanding highway network and increasing intercity travel, there’s a growing demand for simpler and cost-effective toll solutions.
The ₹3000 annual pass addresses this by offering nationwide convenience to frequent travelers.
How Will Private Concessionaires Be Compensated?
One of the key hurdles was that existing contracts with toll operators didn’t account for annual passes. To resolve this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will digitally track vehicle movement and compensate concessionaires based on the gap between their projected collections and actual revenue.
This agreement makes the policy viable without renegotiating every toll contract.

FASTag Integration and Banking Safeguards
The new system continues to rely on FASTag for seamless payment processing. To prevent toll evasion, banks will get enhanced powers, such as:
Imposing minimum balance limits
Enforcing penalty charges if toll dues are left unpaid
Ensuring full recovery even when a vehicle exits the road network without payment
Three pilot projects testing this model have already delivered 98% accuracy, giving the government the confidence to roll it out nationwide.
What’s Next?
The policy is expected to be announced soon, pending final approval. Once active, FASTag users could see toll costs slashed by nearly 50%, with the added convenience of not stopping at toll gates and a flat yearly rate that simplifies trip budgeting for frequent highway travelers.
As India moves toward a digitally connected, barrier-free road ecosystem, this upcoming toll policy may redefine how millions experience road travel, making it faster, fairer, and far more convenient.
